Shane O'Neills Camloch - Club Notes
May 20, 2012
Seniors
Our seniors produced a poor performance on Friday night to fall to their second defeat in five days against Lurgan opposition, this time losing by five points to St Pauls 2 - 11 to 0 - 12.
With just over ten minutes gone in the game the Shanes trailed 1 - 3 to no score before Peter O'Brien and Paul O'Rourke got two quick points for the Camlough side. St Pauls got their fourth point soon after, with a free from Peter O'Brien and a '45 from Neil Paul Lennon keeping the Shanes in touch. Another St Pauls point put them four ahead again but Brendy Mackin fired over two long range points to leave just two between the sides. Despite trailing by six points in the opening stages the Shanes were now back in the game but they conceded a second goal right on half-time and they went into the break five in arrears.
The Shanes made a much better start to the second-half with points from Neil Paul Lennon and Paul O'Rourke with St Pauls responding with a pointed free. O'Rourke got his second point of the half minutes later only for St Pauls to respond again with their seventh point of the game to keep them four ahead. Neil Paul Lennon reduced the deficit to just two with a couple of well taken frees but it was St Pauls who kicked on from there, scoring four points in a row to seal their win with Marc Feehan replying for the Shanes with a solitary point.
Minor Boys
Our minors weren't in action last week but they are scheduled to take Ballymacnab at home tonight.
U14 Boys
Our U14s were involved in a thrilling championship game against St Brigids last Tuesday night, a match in which both teams played their part.
St Brigids notched up the first point of the game with Morgan Egan replying for the Shanes with a free before Oisín O'Callaghan nudged the Shanes ahead. St Brigids drew level soon after only for young O'Callaghan fired over his second point to put the Shanes back in front but St Brigids responded with another point minutes later. Kenny Mooney restored the away team's advantage with a fine individual point but this was quickly cancelled out by another St Brigids point and they quickly followed this up with the opening goal of the game to push them three points ahead. However, the Shanes went down the other end almost immediately and replied in great style when Eamon McCabe got his side's first goal to tie the game again but it was St Brigids who went into the break one point ahead when they got the last point of the half.
The home team increased their advantage to two points shortly after the interval before Matthew Girvan pounced on a loose ball and fired it to the back of the net and leave the Shanes ahead by a single point. As with the first-half St Brigids replied straight away with another point to level things again for the sixth time in the game. The Shanes then hit a bit of a purple patch, scoring three points in a row with Morgan Egan, Eamon McCabe and Ciarán Mackin all on target but to their credit St Brigids rallied again and scored three in a row of their own to tie the game again. With extra time looming both sides had chances to win the game but with time almost up the Shanes were awarded a free and Morgan Egan held his nerve to calmly slot the ball over the bar to ensure the win for the Camlough lads, 2 - 8 to 1 - 10.
Great credit must go to the entire Shanes squad - goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, forwards - for the effort and commitment they showed on the night and credit also to both teams for serving up a great game of football.

Senior Jersey Launch Night
Last Wednesday night saw the club officially launch their new senior jersey. This year the club has decided to forfeit a sponsor's name and that the jersey should carry the Alcohol and Substance Abuse (ASAP) logo, a GAA backed initiative.
Colin Regan, the ASAP National Co-ordinator, was present on the night to give a talk to some of our younger members on the ill effects of alcohol, along with Aileen Cummins from the Ulster Council who will give a talk on diet and nutrition. The night proved to be very informative for our youth members and the other people in attendance.
The club would like to thank Colin, Aileen and John Moley for their attendance on the night and Yasmin Mackin and Brendy Mackin for organising the event and ensuring that it all went well.
