Doherty, Dan

April 14, 2005
The Late Dan Doherty The death of Mr Dan Doherty, Slagh Lane, Rasharkin, which occurred peacefully at his residence after a long illness, on Friday 1st April, has caused much sadness within the local community and indeed much further afield. He is survived by his wife, Una, daughters Marian, Breda, Geraldine, Colette, Nuala, Sheena, Joanne, Mary Frances and Margaret and sons Donal, Karol and Thomas and foster children Charlotte and Mary. Dan bore his illness with great fortitude and dignity. An outgoing person, he was very much a family man; whose priority in life was his wife and family. He was a well known and highly respected pig dealer in his time and this occupation took him all over Ireland. Dan's one great passion in life was football and he was prominent GAA figure. He was Chairman of St. Mary's GAC, Rasharkin, from 1967-1977 and again from 1994-1995 and remained a trustee of the club right up until his death. He had been an active playing member of the club in his youth and was joint team manager of the club for a lengthy period of time. Also a founder member of Kilrea and Rasharkin Credit Union, in 1964, Dan served on the Board of Directors and was President of the Credit Union on several occasions. A life-long pioneer he was a member of the local PTAA and wore his gold pin with great pride. Dan was also a member of the Board of Governors of St. Patrick's P.S., Rasharkin, and was a popular member of St. Olcan's bowing club. His funeral took place on Sunday 3rd April with Mass in St. Mary's Church, Raskarkin, where Canon Malachy Murphy, PP and Rev. Fr Brian O'Kane (SMA order) concelebrated. Family members and colleagues participated in the Liturgy. The beautiful music and singing provided by Eamon McCrystal enhanced the solemnity of the occasion. The large attendance at the wake and funeral bore testimony to the high esteem in which Dan and his family are held. It was indeed a fitting tribute that a guard of honour was formed by the local St. Mary's club. Following Mass, Dan was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. We offer our condolences to his grieving wife, daughters, sons, foster children, brothers Henry, Robert, Pat, Tony and Seamus and sisters Eileen Kearns, Cassie Carey, Bridie Hardy and Cecilia Mullan. He had been predeceased by a sister, Jean McIntyre. Sympathy is also extended to his sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, mother-in-law, Mrs Annie McKillop and wider circle of family and friends by whom he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
