Charity Match
August 03, 2010
Organisers of a charity match to be played between Dunloy and Lisbellaw, which will raise funds for the Irish Children's Pilgrimage fund, expect Birr's Brian Whelahan and Athenry's Joe Rabbitte to be in attendance.
The event will take place on Saturday August 7 at Lisbellaw hurling pitch, Cavanacaragh at 6pm. The main draw is a challenge match between a Lisbellaw select team and a group of Dunloy Cúchulainns legends. But there will also be junior and senior poc fada, target hurling and various activities for children.
John Porteous, one of the organisers of the event, links the two clubs as he is from Fermanagh but has been the Dunloy team doctor since 1991.
"Basically the group that travels to Lourdes every Easter, we have had some young people from Dunloy and from Lisbellaw out together and they were playing hurling together on the lawn while we were there. That was what put the idea into my head."
They hope to raise somewhere between £1,500 and £2,000, for the Irish Pilgrimage fund, a group which brings hundreds of Irish young people to Lourdes. Seamus McCusker will gather up the Fermanagh contingent while Seamus Elliott is organising the Dunloy old boys.
