Cunningham under no illusions
June 27, 2009
Paddy Cunningham feels Antrim will have it all to do if they are to reach their first Ulster SFC final in 39 years at Cavan's expense this evening.
The Saffrons caused a huge upset when beating Donegal in the last round, and Lamh Dhearg clubman Cunningham believes a similar performance will be required if they are to maintain their momentum against Tommy Carr's side in Clones.
"You have to be looking forward to it, it's an Ulster semi-final," he said.
"But we're under no illusions, Cavan are a formidable side with some fantastic individuals. They've got big players right throughout their team.
"They're going to be ready for us and they're going in as favourites, and deservedly so after their win against Fermanagh."
The 23-year-old sharpshooter is hoping the days when Antrim exited the Ulster championship at the first hurdle are now firmly behind them.
"If we're honest, we just didn't perform on the day," he said of their poor championship record in recent years.
"We put it up to teams for 20 minutes and then just folded. But now we're looking to put the critics right, because we know ourselves that we're more than capable of playing at the high level.
"There's no point in training all year if you're going to go out on the big and get beat every year. We knew we had to make the breakthrough and hopefully now we've done that."
