GAA chiefs discuss Casement plans with First Minister
June 16, 2009
The GAA's top brass, including president Christy Cooney and director-general Pauric Duffy, held an historic meeting with Northern Ireland's First Minister Peter Robinson in Stormont yesterday.
Ambitious plans to develop Casement Park in Belfast into a 42,000-capacity stadium were briefly discussed during the 20-minute meeting. The high-powered GAA delegation also included former president Nickey Brennan and Ulster Council officials Tom Daly and Danny Murphy.
Cooney said the GAA delegation "appreciated" the opportunity to meet with First Minister Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and for the respective parties to "reflect on some of the key issues" the GAA and the Ulster Council are pursuing.
"I was in Belfast for a number of reasons, including a pre-arranged meeting in Parliament Buildings with the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, and we appreciated the opportunity to meet jointly with him and First Minister Peter Robinson," Cooney explained.
