It has been a good year for the provincial championships. Cork and Clare gave Kerry good games. Connacht had competitive semi-finals and final. Ulster delivering as always. Great scenes of celebration after the Connacht and Ulster finals. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7922 - 12/05/2024 19:20:40 2544347 Link 1 |

1) Galway, Armagh and Derry to battle for the group win and the direct route to the quarter-finals. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7922 - 12/05/2024 20:30:44 2544362 Link 0 |
Yeah RealDub today was brilliant for the drama but the score taking was topclass.Ulster is always competitive but has produced very boring football at times but recently its been so exciting.Agree it was also great the Leinster final was nt a massacre and fair play to Louth and Ger Brennan.Micky Harte did great work with Louth but Ger Brennan seems to have brought them on even more.to another level. As usual Brian Fenton stood tall.

It took a Kerryman to make Clare competitive in the Munster final and a Dub to make Louth competitive in the Leinster final.

Some serious self sabotage from Derry in Salthill. McKinless foul was crazy carry on. Mad amount of balls dropping short. And Rodgers stupid follow through led directly to a Galway point and goal. Galway in a great position now. MachaireConnacht (Roscommon) - Posts: 819 - 18/05/2024 18:41:43 2545438 Link 1 |
Déjà vu for Galway. It was Tyrone who had a man sent off against them last year. Good wins for Kerry, Mayo and Galway. The battle to win the groups is important for the direct route to the quarter-finals. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7922 - 18/05/2024 19:37:56 2545450 Link 0 |
Two losses on the spin for Derry. Huge questions will be asked now of Mickey Harte. He was brought in to take the group forward and for his All Ireland successes. Mitigating circumstances tonight with injuries and a red card but the last two performances have not been good enough. Improvement is needed- and quick. For a team known for their control and composure over the past couple of years it was surprising to see what happened Derry today. Do you think they felt the pressure of bouncing back too much? Ye looked comfortable enough initially, although missing scorable shots, before the red and got yer scores a bit more easier than Galway.

Of that there is no doubt but we are well versed in Championship the last few years with semi-final appearances. Harte is going to need to get things in order very quickly- a lot of fans were aghast at his appointment and it won't take too much more for things to turn.

There was pressure to bounce back. It shouldn't however have led to the level of indiscipline in the performance. I actually thought we were quite flat early on and did much the same as against Donegal dropping shots short far too often. The loss of McGrogan, Doherty and McEvoy were big losses. That's the half back line that started the league final. McKinless then does something not only daft but nasty. He could face a few games out with a ban. I thought Harte got the team selection wrong. I would have thought Gilmore and Mullholland could have slotted in to the half back line with McKinless as centre back. Instead he started E. Bradley and D. Cassidy who are good players but it just didn't work. Jazzyjeff (Derry) - Posts: 173 - 18/05/2024 21:12:18 2545478 Link 0 |
Derry weren't that far off Galway today, playing with a man down and the amount of ball dropping short and bad wides. Derry were back into the game scoring 3 in a row and Mc Guigan wins a high ball and goes for a 1 in 10 goal chance, over the bar would have done, Galway score a goal 10 seconds later. Mc Kindless? Needs a nice ban.

Galway have better more naturally talented players than Derry. Galway "dark horses" for an all Ireland I reckon.

The absolute irony of Mickey Harte accusing another teams player of engaging in theatrics. Galway9801 (Galway) - Posts: 1760 - 19/05/2024 08:02:27 2545492 Link 1 |
Are we going to see more teams adopt the approach of basically accepting a hiding against the better teams and concentrating on the one or ones they need to qualify for the next round? BarneyGrant (Dublin) - Posts: 2671 - 19/05/2024 10:13:42 2545504 Link 0 |
You know what Barney I agree with you totally. This new system is a joke with 3 out of 4 teams qualifying there is little or no jeopardy.People gave out about the super 8s saying you could have dead rubbers but with only two teams qualifying teams would be fighting for victory.Monaghan looked like a team yesterday that felt they would nt beat Kerry in Killarney so they just went through the motions knowing a win against either Meath or Louth will see them qualify. The gaa scored a massive own goal with this system. In reality a team could lose two games draw the last and still qualify on scoring difference.Even the supporters are nt buying into this.Lovely weather yesterday and crowds a way down.Killarney had under 9000 and Galway and Derry even less(and this was the fixture on the round).
