IT Carlow, WIT and NUIG booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Fitzgibbon Cup yesterday.
Despite drawing 3-10 to 2-13 with DCU, DJ Carey's IT Carlow progressed to the knockout stages. First half goals from Marty Kavanagh and Niall Brassil helped them to a seven-point lead, but a Richie Lawlor goal after the restart drew DCU level. There was a further exchange of goals between Seamus Casey (IT Carlow) and Sean Currie (DCU) as it finished all-square.
WIT coasted into the last eight with a 5-17 to 0-20 victory over Maynooth University. Padraig Fitzgerald's two first half goals had the Waterford students 2-9 to 0-12 up at half-time. Further majors from Ciaran Kirwan (two) and Shane Bennett in the second half sealed a comfortable win,
NUIG topped Group A following a 0-23 to 0-14 win over UCC. Free-taker Evan Niland shot 0-13, while his Galway team-mate Brian Concannon chipped in with 0-3, as the Westerners cruised to victory after leading by 0-15 to 0-6 at half-time.
Despite having only pride to play for, Mary Immaculate College and UCD fought out an epic 6-15 each draw. It was nip and tuck throughout, with Bernie Butler's late point earning Mary I a share of the spoils.
