Ger Aylward has announced his retirement from inter-county duty with Kilkenny.

The Glenmore attacker walks away from the county scene after an impressive career that saw him win two All-Ireland SHC medals, three Leinster SHC medals as well as an All-Star award in 2015, though injury curtailed his involvement over the last four seasons.

He featured as a substitute in the All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Waterford last month but at the age of just 28 Aylward decided it was time to hang up his boots and follows the lead of team-mate Paul Murphy, who also made the decision to retire.

“Would just like to take this opportunity to thank family and friends for the support of the last seven years,” Aylward said in a statement on Instagram.

“It was an honour to wear the black and amber. Time to call it a day.

"Thanks for the memories."
