Playing Rules

(Oldest Posts First)

A lot of referees ,players and supporters don't know the rules, a player can touch play away the ball on the ground if he had possession of the ball and falls or is knocked to the ground and he can score too, please read the rules referees supporters

Giving a possession free after a row is another mistake a lot of referees make. Possession frees are only for when the game has been stopped for an injury.

Another is that in hurling players must be 20 metres back from the ball when a free is taken, not 13 metres

From open play an attacking player cannot be in the square before the ball is KICKED, from a free kick an attacking player cannot be in the square before the ball ARRIVES in the square.

In fairness to referees in a lot of cases most supporters haven't a clue of some of the rules, and many referees get unfair criticism from fans who haven't a clue themselves.

No such thing as a soft free either, it's a free or it's not, that saying drives me mad

or the mixing hurling rules with football rules when someone looses their hurl .. solo the ball and then kick pass it!!

Or Billy Byrne did the best one ever when he bounced the ball and then kicked it to the net :-)

The first part of that rule shows exactly why there are always so many issues. As a ref you are mainly watching the man in posession of the ball, without very sharp umpires how would you ever notice if the player was in the square before the ball was kicked. A lot of club games don't have neutral umpires and even when the do how many are also watching the player with the ball rather than the square.
