Division 6 champions

It may not have been pretty, but Kilbeggan players and supporters weren’t complaining after withstanding a late Milltown rally last Saturday evening at TEG Cusack Park to be crowned All-County League Division 6 champions.

A 0-9 to 1-5 victory secured our first league title of any kind since 2003 and completed an impressive Division 6 campaign in which we won all of our games. With a very young team on show, it also bodes well for the future and for the upcoming IFC when many of the same players are sure to feature.

Despite being already assured of promotion to Division 5 for 2023, both sides were eager to add silverware. In blustery conditions, Micheál Coffey opened the scoring from a seventh-minute free before Milltown replied with points from Luke Gunning and Harry Pendred. But the second quarter belonged to the Kilbeggan second string who shot five unanswered points per Mark Wrafter, Brendan McMahon, Micheál Coffey, Darragh Coffey and Danny Scully to take a 0-6 to 0-2 lead into the break.

Further scores after the restart from Niall Carey (two) and James Hanlon stretched our lead to 0-9 to 0-4 before a scrambled injury-time goal from Alan Geraghty and a Luke Gunning point reduced the deficit to the minimum. Milltown’s Frank McLoughlin had a late chance to equalise, but his shot from 40 metres drifted to the left and wide as we held on by the skin of our teeth.

Congratulations to manager Paddy Malynn and his backroom team of Mark Geoghegan, Leon Carberry, Kevin Smith, Donal Fox and Rob Connor (physio). Hopefully, it won’t be the last success we see this year.
