ACL Div.5: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-9 Multyfarnham 2-7

Mullingar Shamrocks came up short by a single point in this ACL Div.5 encounter in Springfield.

Multyfarnham led by 1-5 to 1-3 at the interval thanks to a goal scored by Leroy Casserly. Mark Shaw was Shamrocks goalscorer and John O’Reilly, Matthew Shaw and Zach Aherne added the points. A scoring burst of two points early in the second half levelled the contest; Niall Hannigan pointed from long range and Paddy Joyce added a second point almost immediately. Another point from Sean Hynes edged Shamrocks ahead before Multyfarnham had their mini-scoring spell with Stephen Sweeney cutting through the Shamrocks defence for a goal and Adam Bates pointed to extend the Multy lead to three points (2-6 to 1-6). Aaron Russell scored a fine point and Ryan Blundell added another almost immediately to complete our second mini-scoring burst. A pointed free by Adam Bates was neutralised by a similar score by Niall Hannigan but unfortunately this proved to be the last kick of the evening.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Mikey Curley; Ben Egan, Matthew Siode, Eamonn Breslin; Paddy Joyce (0-1), Ryan Blundell (0-1), Niall Hannigan (0-2); John O’Reilly (0-1), Pearse Corroon; Andrew Shaw (0-1) [Robin Habimana], Zach Aherne (0-1), James Larkin; Matthew Shaw (1-0) [Aaron Russell 0-1], Seán Hynes (0-1), Adam Boyle (Ciaran Gowran).

ACL Div.3: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-15 Milltownpass 1-13

A very satisfactory ACL Div.3 campaign ended in Springfield on Thursday evening with a deserve two point victory over Milltownpass.

Unlike the mini-scoring blitzs against Multyfarnham on Tuesday, Shamrocks began on this occasion with a real scoring blitz that proved crucial in the end with Jordan Warde the inspiration behind about five minutes of football that saw Shamrocks notch 1-4 before Milltownpass replied. Tomass Turks scored the goal created by a superb pass from Jordan and Jordan himself notched the points. Niall Hannigan (0-2) and Andrew Shaw also kicked points as Wayne Boyce notched the Milltownpass goal to leave a half-time score of 1-11 to 1-6. Jordan Warde added another point on resumption but four great long-range points by Milltownpass reduced the deficit to the minimum. Niall Hannigan pointed as did Jordan Warde (from a great Paddy Joyce pass) but Milltownpass balanced these with like scores as Aaron Purcell’s black card inspired some discussion as to what was and what was not a black card. In the last few nervous  minutes Paddy Joyce was the one who took the responsibility of shooting and kicked a neat long range point to seal the game which ended with Shamrocks impressively retaining possession to secure the points.

A positive league campaign in the end after a rocky start with ACL Div.3 status comfortably retained; the Paddy Joyce and Simon Quinn return to active service continues whilst they were joined on this occasion by Niall Ouchbakou one of our younger promising footballers, on the comeback trail.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Mikey Curley; Aaron Purcell, Efe Siode, Eamonn Breslin; Niall Ouchbakou (Sean Hynes), Pearse Corroon, Matthew Siode; Zach Aherne, Niall Hannigan (0-3); Andrew Shaw (0-1),Simon Quinn, Tomass Turks (1-0); Jordan Warde (0-8), Seán Hynes (Adam Boyle), Paddy Joyce (0-1).

ACL Div. 5: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-9 Castledaly 2-9

The second narrow defeat in the week for our ACL Div.5 team this time against a Castledaly side like ourselves striving to avoid relegation.

After leading by 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval after playing against a strong breeze Shamrocks appeared to be in a good position and when Mark Shaw kicked two good points to extend the lead it looked even better. Castledaly however responded and upped their game and began to string together some good passing movements. Two of these resulted in goals both finished by Michael Lynch and secure a 2-7 to 0-8 lead for the visitors. Shamrocks too responded and Adam Boyle kicked a history making great long-range point to narrow the gap. Then Matthew Siode, taking a leaf from Efi’s book, soloed the length of the field to score a great goal (this was a match of three great goals). Matthew’s initial attempt was blocked but he buried the rebound. And then the Castledaly defence parted and Robbie Boyle was through and a goal looked certain as Robbie blasted for the top corner but M. J. McLoughlin (a player who caused us a lot of heartaches in the past as a forward) rose to the occasion and saved brilliantly. Ryan Blundell pointed but the final whistle ended the recovery.

However, a little bit of Mullingar Shamrocks history was created in this match it is  believed. When Adam Boyle pointed in the second half, he was completing a family double as the daddy Robbie scored a point in the first half. This was the first occasion a father and son have scored for Mullingar Shamrocks in a competitive match or any other type of match for that matter as far as we know.

One has to admire the dedication of some of the experienced players who lined out for Shamrocks in this game. Well done to Robbie Boyle and Ritchie Daly who lined out for the second time in a few hours as they were members of the Westmeath Over-40s team that defeated Laois in the Leinster championship in a curtain raiser to the ACL game.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Mikey Curley; Ritchie Daly, Matthew Siode (1-0), Eamonn Breslin; Conor Fitzpatrick (0-1), Ryan Blundell (0-1), Ben Egan; Niall Hannigan (0-1), Andrew Shaw; Seán Hynes, Paddy Joyce (0-1), Adam Boyle (0-1); Mark Shaw (0-3), Robbie Boyle (0-1) [Garrett Doyle], Brian Melody.

Under-8 and Under-10 Blitz

Well done to our U8 and U10 girls who played a blitz in Multyfarnham on Saturday morning. The girls played great football and showed fantastic team work in all of their games. Big thank you to our hosts Multyfarnham, parents and supporters for cheering on the girls along with their coaches Kevin, Tom, Sophie and Karen on the day.

Cumann na mBunscoil

After an almost three year Covid caused hiatus, the Cumann Na mBunscol competition resumed in recent months and next week sees the concluding stages of the competition with a GAA extravaganza in Cusack Park. There are many young Mullingar Shamrocks’ players involved with various schools in the finals and we wish them the best of luck in their endeavours.

A number of Shamrocks’ coaches also assist some of the national schools with coaching duties. St. Colman’s face St. Michael’s from Castletown in the boys’ division 2 hurling final on Tuesday 14th at 3.00 with a large contingent of Shamrocks’ dual players on duty. The following day sees the boys’ Division 3 final featuring Gaelscoil an Mhuilinn against Clonmellon NS at 4.00 followed by the girls’ division 2 final between St. Colmcille’s Gainstown and Tang NS at 5.00.

Thursday afternoon, June 16th sees Holy Family NS face St. Joseph’s Rathwire in the boys’ division 2 final at 5.00 and proceedings conclude on Thursday at 6.00 when St. Colman’s face St. Kenny’s in the boys’ division 1 final with Shamrocks’ players featuring on both teams.

The finals of this competition showcase the best of Gaelic games with sweepers, blanket defences and negative tactics thankfully absent, these games will not resemble Derry v Donegal. We encourage Shamrocks’ supporters to show their appreciation for our young players’ endeavours by attending some of the above finals.
