Southern Gaels Hurling Club Notes

U7, U9 & U11 Blitz, Castletown Geoghegan & Clonkill, Sat 24th July

Last Saturday Southern Gaels hosted Castletown Geoghegan at U7 & U9 and Clonkill at U11 in a sunny Páirc Chiaráin. At each age level all clubs had two teams which was great numbers considering we are in the middle of holiday season. It shows the great work put in by all three clubs to have hurling thriving in their respective areas.

At U7 the games were ground based hurling. This was the groups first blitz and they took the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learned over the past four months.

At U9 the game was a mixture of ground and high hurling, with the matches being very closely fought and all teams taking some excellent scores.

At U11 we played two very competitive games against strong opposition, both teams matched each other in terms of skill and commitment. The players excelled on the morning and every player put in a massive effort for the full duration of the matches on a very warm morning. These games will help bring the players to the next level on their hurling journey.

Thanks to CTG and Clonkill for travelling to Athlone, all the mentors who made the blitz possible and to the parents for supporting the players.

Under 15 Championship

Southern Gaels U15s opened their 2021 championship campaign last Friday evening with a comprehensive victory over a young Cullion side in Páirc Chiaráin under trying heat conditions. More impressive than the scoreline, however, was the manner in which they achieved the win with the skill and style being practised in training translating onto the match structure and strategy. Added to that, the spirit that this up-and-coming squad showed promises that further success this year will be forthcoming. Anthony Mannion earned Man of the Match with a strong performance driving from the half back line and acting as provider to Ruairí Ó Duibhir who bagged 2-5 for the team by the final whistle. There were some fine performances to those new to the U15 from last year’s U13s with Kyle Mahon, Matthew Turner, Diarmuid and Ciarán Morgan in particularly shining in their roles. This from a team that were down many of their key players due to injury, close contact and holidays. Team on the day were: Gearóid McCarthy, Josh Baine, Matthew Turner, Anthony Mannion, Dara Shortall, Kyle Mahon, Aaron Murphy, Eoin Naughton, Ciarán Morgan, Ruairí Ó Duibhir, Seán O’Neill, Diarmuid Morgan and Aaron Power with subs Leon Macken, Luke Duffy and Stephen O’Connor all playing on the night.

Under 13 League.

Southern Gaels suffered a defeat to St Vincent’s (Ringtown/Crookedwood) in Paric Chiaráin last week as a much depleted side were outplayed for most of the game.  They have four remaining group games before the second phase takes place later in the summer.

Junior B Championship

Castletown Geoghegan 1-15  Southern Gaels 0-10

Southern Gaels hurled well throughout but though only four points adrift at half time were unable to sustain their efforts and Castletown triumphed in the end. Threy now face Crookedwood in their final group game and need a win to progress to the knockout stages. Continuing to develop are Cian Mc Carthy, Chulainn Dowd, Evan Farrell and Sean Murphy, the players who have moved up from juvenile hurling since last year. Also impressive was Enda Daly who has recently joined the club.
