Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies finish Division 3 on a high

Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies have won their last 2 games in Division 3. On Friday 16th of July a small but determined panel travelled to Garrycastle for what was an enjoyable competitive game played in strong sunshine. Mullingar had the better start, with 2 goals from Holly McCormack helping them to a lead of 2-5 to 1-3 at the first water break. The visitors were outscored however in the 2nd quarter to go in at half time a goal down. Good scoring from the Shamrocks girls in the 3rd quarter meant that it was all level at the water break. The last quarter was very competitive with both teams fighting hard for the win. With the help of goals from Jasmine Haugh and Jodi  Aherne, Jodi scoring in her first appearance at senior level, Shamrocks ran out 4 point winners on a score line of 4-14 to 3-13

Panel and scorers for the game : Sinead Sweeney, Eve Hynes, Liveta Lavruskaite, Sophie Hegarty (captain), Mairead Newman 0-2, Cliodhna Spellman, Orianna Quinn, Laura Whitelaw 0-1, Shona McNicholas, Susanna Buckley 0-3, Micaela O’Connor 0-1, Jenna Kelly 0-2,  Kirsty Dunne, Holly McCormack 2-3 (0-3 frees), Jasmine Haugh 1-2, Jodi Aherne 1-0 and Jagoda Bartosiewicz

One week later, both the sunshine and winning ways held out for the last Division 3 round robin game. On Friday night last Mullingar Shamrocks welcomed Westmeath’s newest LGFA club, Cill Oige to Springfield. Once again conditions were hot on the pitch and Shamrocks, playing into the town end opened well, aided by a good breeze. Emma Morris opened the scoring with a point from play and Shamrocks dominated play throughout the first half.  Two goals from Susanna Buckley and a goal  from Jodi Aherne, together with another 7 points from play meant that Shamrocks went in at half-time with a comfortable lead. The visitors continued to battle hard in the second half and against the breeze the Shamrocks defenders had to work hard to preserve the lead. Three points in the 3rd quarter together with another 4 in the last quarter maintained the lead in what was a very encouraging team performance.

Panel and scorers: Sinead Sweeney, Eve Hynes, Liveta Lavrauskiete, Sophie Hegarty (captain), Mairead Newman 0-1, Cliodhna Spellman, Orianna Quinn, Laura Whitelaw 0-1, Shona McNicolas, Jenna Kelly 0-3, Casey McDermott, Susanna Buckley 2-5, Kirsty Dunne, Emma Morris 0-2, Jasmine Haugh 0-2, Jodi Aherne 1-1, Teresa Connell, Carla Gibney and Jagoda Bartosiewicz

This was two good victories in a row for this young team who were unlucky in earlier games to lose by small margins. Positives for the club were the introduction of a group of very promising under 16 players to adult football, we will be sure to see more of Sinead Sweeney, Jagoda Bartosiewicz, Ellie O'Sullivan and Jodi Aherne joining a group of dedicated minor players at this level.

Mullingar Shamrocks Ladies wishes a speedy recovery and return to play to Anne Marie O’Reilly following her injury in a recent match.

Busy Under-15s ...

Shamrocks’ under 15 teams had their second outings in their respective championships on a sweltering Friday evening last with matches in Springfield and Killucan. In Springfield, the boys secured an excellent win on a 3–11 to 3-7 final scoreline over St. Earnan’s. Coaches Matt Ledwith, Tony Sheerin and Tom Ormsby were thrilled with their charges in a very competitive game well handled by Brendan Keena. A second half penalty expertly converted by Padraig Casey and whole hearted defending by Justin Haugh, Ty Masterson, Ben Sheerin and Charlie Foy ensured that the lead was maintained while Tommy Daly, Ben McNamee and Criostoir Ormsby notched crucial scores in the third quarter. Team captain Matthew Shaw, Paul Keating and Ronan Byrne also made significant contributions throughout. These games are great experience for a young side and the players were justifiably pleased afterwards. In Killucan, the green and whites were determined to put the disappointment of their opening day defeat behind them and early scores from Gavin Pierce and Ryan Kelly helped settle the side. Defenders Gary Branigan, Peter Finch, Hugh O’ Sullivan Sexton and team captain Callum Rigney were alert throughout and Luke Raeside and Conor Heffernan supplied the forwards with good quality ball. Killucan fought determinedly to the end with Conor Leech and Mark Doherty prominent but by Jim Rock’s final whistle the visitors had gained their first points of the campaign. Thirty seven players saw significant action across the two matches on Friday evening last. There were a  large number of Shamrocks’ parents present in both venues and this level of support is certainly appreciated. The players on duty on Friday were: Matthew Doyle, Hugh Carey, Andrew Gavigan, Stephen Battle, Matas Puida, Tommy Daly, Ryan Kelly, Hugh O’ Sullivan Sexton, Paul Keating, Donnacha Maguire, Conor Heffernan, Ben Sheerin, Ben McNamee, Charlie Foy, James Joyce, Padraig Casey, James Ryan, Ted Aherne, Lorcan Penrose, Callum Rigney, Mo Mohammed, Peter Finch, Justin Haugh, Adam Buckley, Gary Branigan, James Flynn, Ty Masterson, Brian Wycherly, Jack Toal, Gavin Pierce, Ronan Byrne, Criostoir Ormsby, Matthew Shaw, Tommy Idowu, Adam Glynn, Alex Sheerin and Luke
