THE DOWNS GAA NOTES July 18th 2021
Underage Results
Our U17s were out in the first round of the Championship last Monday evening in a sunny Kevin Molloy Park. The Downs lads unfortunately came up short on this occasion despite their valiant efforts. Mullingar Shamrocks were very competitive from the throw in and took their chances well throughout the game. The Downs were unlucky at times hitting the woodwork twice along with a few near misses at crucial stages of the game including an unconverted penalty. No doubt that these lads will be ready to bounce back in their second round game in the coming weeks against Killucan. Better days ahead for this bunch of players. The final score read 5-09 to 1-07.

Our U13s travelled to Springfield on Wednesday evening for Round 2 of the Championship against Mullingar Shamrocks. The home side started the better taking an early lead. It took The Downs a while to get to the pace of the game and at the half time break we were up by four points. Mullingar came at us with intent in the final quarter to eventually level the game but we finished the stronger and closed the game off with a couple of goals to win the match by six points. Thanks to Mullingar Shamrocks for hosting and well done to both teams for entertaining us with a brilliant game. Next up is Shandonagh in a couple of weeks time. Well done to all the boys and their coaches.
Our U15 boys recorded a well-earned win away against Lilliput Gaels in Ballinagore last Friday evening on a score-line of 3-07 to 5-07. It was a great squad effort against a strong and competitive Lilliput Gaels on a very warm and energy sapping evening. Both teams can take positives from the game having produced some excellent passages of play. Well done to all the boys and the coaches.

Our U7s, U9s and U11s all travelled to Ballymore last Saturday on possibly the hottest day of the year so far. This didn’t deter our boys and girls from giving their all in a host of games in a very well organised Ballymore GAA pitch. Our opposition on the day in all three age groups was Millmore Gaels and Tubberclair. Our U7s started the morning off with 2 teams of our boys and girls playing simultaneously. A wonderful display by all our young superstars in the searing heat. Our U9s then took to the field shortly after. Again two teams graced the field and served up some fantastic displays of football despite the rising temperatures. Finally, our U11s took their turn. Eddie Quinlan’s charges played some great football and can be very proud of their display. We thank Ballymore GAA for being superb hosts as usual. It was a dash for ice-creams afterwards for all involved after a memorable morning of football. Well done to all the coaches/parents and children for travelling.

LGFA
The Downs U 10 management team hosted their first Go Games of 2021 in The Downs last Monday evening and what a festival of football we were served up. Ten teams from five different clubs took part and with the weather on our side, a most enjoyable evening of football ensued. Each team played 3 twenty minute games with some excellent skills and performances on display. A massive well done to Carley Kelly and crew for a job well done in organising. Thanks also to the travelling clubs St, Lomans, Multyfanham, Ballycomoyle and Bunbrosna. Well done to all.
Our U 12’s were also in action on Tuesday evening against a strong Shandonagh side. Both sides put in a huge performance for their club and can be very proud of their display. The Downs girls are improving with every game and making great progress.
Our U16 girls played a strong St. Pauls/Delvin team on Thursday evening last at home. The girls battled hard despite missing a few of their regular key players but unfortunately were on the wrong side of this encounter. Hard luck girls and well done to team coaches.
Congratulations/ Commiserations
The Westmeath U -20s run in the Eirgrid Leinster U-20 Championship came to an end last Thursday against Offaly. Hard luck to Damien Gavin and his squad and particularly our own lads Kevin O’Sullivan, Liam Moran and captain Charlie Drumm. The Westmeath seniors also bowed out of this year’s championship after a valiant effort last Sunday against Kildare. Well done to our three panellists: Trevor Martin, Conor Coughlan and Johnathan Lynam. We also congratulate the Westmeath Hurlers on their fantastic Joe McDonagh success, special mention to our own two clubmen Darragh Egerton and Niall Mitchell.
Cúl Camp
The Downs GAA Club was a hive of activity all this week with the annual Cúl Camp taking place. The weather was on our side with the sunshine coming out to greet all the young members of our club throughout the week which made the camp all the more enjoyable. A huge well done to our own Bernie Corroon and her colleagues for organising such a great event.
