Junior B Football Championship: Castledaly 1-16(19) Caulry 3-9(18)

Every game between Castledaly  and Caulry reflects the friendly
neighbourly rivalry that is familiar to many clubs nationwide.  With
this fun fuel fired motivation, Castledaly welcomed their bordering
colleagues on Tuesday evening for an entertaining and energetic
fixture befitting previous encounters between the two.
Castledaly got off to a great start with their young team combining
well with their more experienced comrades to forge a teamwork that
grows in confidence and quality at each outing.   Scores from play
from Adam Turley, Cathal Dolan, Darragh Kelly, Michael Lynch, Shane
Fitzpatrick, Emmett Heavin, and a Jordan Nugent free kick, were the
magnificent seven points that Castledaly held at half time, with
Caulry trailed by two in opposition:  0-7 0-5
The second half saw the visitors tag on two points from play in the
early minutes to equalise, before Damien Stone, Adam Turley, Justin
Coughlan created a chance for Cathal Dolan to add his second of the
day and take the lead.
Caulry found their form and a speculative ball into the square was
poked home for the green flag to rise and the lead change again.
Paul Costello rose highest to field the resulting kick out and
exchanged passes with Darragh Kelly before Justin Coughlan was fouled
and Darragh Kelly tapped over the resulting free.
Shane Dolan and Damien Stone impressed in defence with Colin Doyle,
Calvin Farrell, Shane Fitzpatrick, and Olsen North working well with
quiet efficiency to soak up the Caulry pressure.  From a Damien Stone
clearance Darragh Kelly brought the ball forward on a solo run with
support from Michael Lynch who calmly pointed from distance to
equalise again.  10 10
Caulry responded with another defence splitting pass that Castledaly
misread and the green for goal lag rose again.
As Castledaly fought back Calvin Farrell supported the play and was
unlucky to see his snap shot spin off target.  At midfield the
impressive Cathal Dolan had exhausted his injury and Jack Higgins was
introduced at corner back, with Colin Doyle reshuffled into midfield
alongside Michael Lynch, and the impact was immediate as Lynch used
the oppositions confusion to step into space and kick a clever point
from wide on the right wing.
A turnover of possession from Paul Costello again fuelled interplay of
passes between Adam Turley and Darragh Kelly before Darragh pointed
the hard won free kick.
Caulry continued on the attack and follow up efforts drew a sharp save
from custodian Mark Kearney before Calvin Farrell cleared the
immediate danger.  Castledaly responded with a fine team effort
involving Turley and Kelly and Costello, resulting in Michael Lynch
bagging his team only goal in this game.
Caulry pointed from play in the follow up before Turley, Stone and
Coughlan worked a close range free kick chance for Kelly to increase
their lead.
Michael Lynch continued to impress and another point from play was his
reward as Cathal Fitzmaurice was introduced at corner forward and
Jordan Nugent dropped back into defence as the final quarter of the
game proceeded.
With the majority of the game played in good sportsmanship many were
surprised to see a red card issued to Caulry full back, and the home
team worked to press their numerical advantage to good use.  With
Caulry on the attack, a timely interception by Damien Stone prevented
them reducing the deficit.  Michael Lynch saw a shot fall short into
the opposition defence, and Colin Doyle at the opposite end poked away
the ball just as his opposite number prepared to shoot for goal.
Caulry were off target with the follow up from a 45 yard free and as
the play switched to the opposite end,  Cathal Fitzmaurice was on hand
to intervene before Darragh Kelly won a close range free, which
Fitzmaurice duly converted.
Despite the best efforts of Calvin Farrell, Caulry seized the
opportunity to threaten a last minute upset with another goal from
play.  Under increasing pressure, Castledaly responded through Darragh
Kelly whose strong play with Adam Turley sparked on a solo through the
opposition and a neatly taken score on the run was a fine trophy for
the young man’s performance, with what proved the winning point
despite the visitors brace before final whistle.
This Castledaly teams improvement in accuracy combined with creation
of chances proved a winning formula on the day, and we look forward to
similar entertainment in future outings.
