Minor Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-10 The Downs 1-7

Mullingar Shamrocks Minor footballers began their championship campaign on Monday evening last with a short trip to local rivals The Downs. This was a fiercely contested, competitive encounter with the green and whites emerging victorious on a 5-10 to 1-7 scoreline. The management team of Micheál Burke, Seamus Wallace, Vinny Timoney and Niall O' Brien were content with some aspects of the side's performance whilst acknowledging that more work needs to be done on the coaching front. An early goal by Darragh Hughes gave the visitors an advantage that they never subsequently relinquished but the first quarter was notable for the chances spurned by the Shamrocks' boys and The Downs levelled matters after fifteen minutes. Gradually, the likes of Conor Fagan, Shane Ormsby, Aaron Russell, Conor Hickey, Tom and Rory Hickey, Ciarán Kiernan, Rian Adamson and Enda Keating began to influence proceedings and a superbly taken goal by Adam Boyle helped Shamrocks to a half time lead of 2-4 to 1-2. The game continued in a similar vein in the third quarter with Darragh Hughes adding two more goals and the loss of Shane Ormsby to a harsh black card was overcome with Ben White, Ben Egan and Eoin Doran making significant contributions. The Downs through Rian Holding's high fielding and Josh Murtagh put the Shamrocks' rearguard under pressure but the management were able to introduce a raft of substitutions and the game ended on a final score of Mullingar Shamrocks 5-10 The Downs 1-7. Best wishes to Josh Murtagh who sustained an accidental knock in a collision with Shane Ormsby.

Junior B Football Competition: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-9 St Loman’s 2-11.

An enjoyable gallop in Springfield on Tuesday evening ended in a comfortable victory for St Loman’s who had progressed to the knock-out stages of the competition prior to making the short journey to Springfield. The sides were level at 0-5 each a half-time with Seanie Daly (0-2), Gary Corroon (0-2) and John O’Reilly with a superb effort contributing to the Shamrocks total. However, it was a piece of defensive magic that was the highlight from the Shamrocks perspective when Matthew Siode’s brilliantly timed block tackle prevented a certain St Loman’s goal. A Seanie Dinnegan point eventually broke the deadlock in the second half before Conor Cochrane nipped in for the two goals that secured the victory. Gary Corroon added a couple of pointed frees to the Shamrocks total, Seanie Daly scored the highest point of the night and Emmet Walsh completed the scoring. Sean Hynes was busy in goal and made a number of fine saves before Damien Maher called time.

Busy Under-15s ...

Mullingar Shamrocks under 15 teams had their second outings in their respective championships on a sweltering Friday evening last with matches in Springfield and Killucan. In Springfield, the boys secured an excellent win on a 3–11 to 3-7 final scoreline over St. Earnan’s. Coaches Matt Ledwith, Tony Sheerin and Tom Ormsby were thrilled with their charges in an extremely competitive game well handled by Brendan Keena. A second half penalty expertly converted by Padraig Casey and wholehearted defending by Justin Haugh, Ty Masterson, Ben Sheerin and Charlie Foy ensured that the lead was maintained while Tommy Daly, Ben McNamee and Criostóir Ormsby notched crucial scores in the third quarter. Team captain Matthew Shaw, Paul Keating and Ronan Byrne also made significant contributions throughout. These games are great experience for a young side and the players were justifiably pleased afterwards.

In Killucan, the green and whites were determined to put the disappointment of their opening day defeat behind them and early scores from Gavin Pierce and Ryan Kelly helped settle the side. Defenders Gary Branigan, Peter Finch, Hugh O’ Sullivan Sexton and team captain Callum Rigney were alert throughout and Luke Raeside and Conor Heffernan supplied the forwards with good quality ball. Killucan fought determinedly to the end with Conor Leech and Mark Doherty prominent but by Jim Rock’s final whistle the visitors had gained their first points of the campaign. Thirty-seven players saw significant action across the two matches on Friday evening last. There were a large number of Shamrocks’ parents present in both venues and this level of support is certainly appreciated. The players on duty on Friday were: Matthew Doyle, Hugh Carey, Andrew Gavigan, Stephen Battle, Matas Puida, Tommy Daly, Ryan Kelly, Hugh O’ Sullivan Sexton, Paul Keating, Donnacha Maguire, Conor Heffernan, Ben Sheerin, Ben McNamee, Charlie Foy, James Joyce, Padraig Casey, James Ryan, Ted Aherne, Lorcan Penrose, Callum Rigney, Mo Mohammed, Peter Finch, Justin Haugh, Adam Buckley, Gary Branigan, James Flynn, Ty Masterson, Brian Wycherly, Jack Toal, Gavin Pierce, Ronan Byrne, Criostoir Ormsby, Matthew Shaw, Tommy Idowu, Adam Glynn, Alex Sheerin and Luke Raeside.
