Clare brought the curtain down on Waterford’s 2022 campaign with a 3-31 to 2-22 victory in the last round of the Munster senior hurling championship today.

Minus the services of Tony Kelly and John Conlon, the Banner men were up by as many as 19 points in Ennis as they blew Liam Cahill’s team away in their remaining test ahead of the Munster final against Limerick in two weeks’ time.

The home side’s impressive start saw them racing into an early 0-8 to 0-1 lead and while Waterford reduced their arrears to four, it was Clare that struck back with a David Reidy goal that made it 1-11 to 0-6 with 10 minutes left in the first-half.

David Fitzgerald’s goal would send Brian Lohan’s charges in with a commanding 2-16 to 0-9 at the break and the same player netted again after the restart to all but settle the contest in Clare’s favour.

Dessie Hutchinson netted in the 44th minute to reduce the Deise men’s deficit to 13, but they needed more goals to get back into and didn’t get another until injury-time through Patrick Curran, which left them 12 points short in the end.
