GAA president Larry McCarthy has welcomed New York’s participation in the inaugural Tailteann Cup after they came agonisingly close to breaking their Connacht SFC duck against Sligo last Sunday.

It will be the first time that the Exiles will have a second chance in the championship, with former New York chairman and secretary McCarthy telling to RTÉ: "It (New York football) absolutely has its place in the championship, it really has.

"We’re not Mayo and we’re not Galway, but we’ll give the Sligo and Leitrims of this world, and the Roscommons of this world, a rattle every now and again.

"The Tailteann Cup is probably where we’ll end up and that’s the beauty, we’re now going to get a second shot and prior to this we wouldn’t.”
