Urney St. Columba's - Club Notes

July 27, 2021

Comhghairdeas (Congratulations)

There is only one place this week’s notes can begin and that was with the news which broke on Friday past that our own Liam Nelis (Urney, Edendork and Tyrone) was the recipient of the O’Neills Sportswear Lifetime Service to the GAA Award 2020.

Liam received his Award from Uachtarán Comhairle Uladh Mr. Oliver Galligan on behalf of the Ulster GAA Council and it was fitting that the presentation took place at Páirc Naomh Columba, Liam’s home club.

In presenting the Award, An Uachtarán made reference to Liam being a stalwart for many, many years at this Club, before moving onto Edendork as well as reaching the highest position within the Tyrone GAA ranks – Chairman of the County Board.

Liam himself told how his career on the administration side of the GAA started in 1965 as Urney Treasurer and it was in 1969 that he went to Dungannon where by the late 1970s he was invited to join the Committee at Edendork and he held the Secretary position for a few years.

In 1999 Liam was persuaded to stand for a position in the Tyrone County Board and served as Vice-Chairman for three years and Chairman for three years, which also coincided with Tyrone’s historic first Senior All-Ireland Championship victory in 2003.

Liam also served as Ulster Council Delegate for five years and five years as a Central Council Delegate.

So it is with a great deal of pride for Liam’s many family members and friends who still live in the village, as well as everyone involved with the Club, that Liam has received this very well deserved Award. Comhghairdeas Liam!

Comhghairdeas is also due to senior player and youth coach Danny Doherty who has recently graduated with top Honours in Strength and Conditioning Coaching. This is a fantastic achievement for a young man who has come through the ranks at Urney and it is more than very well deserved. Fear maith Danny!

Peil do Dhaoine Fásta (Adult Football)

The Senior and Reserve teams had a ‘bye’ week this week in both League campaigns.

Results elsewhere saw us drop one place from fourth to fifth in the League Table with 10 points from seven games played (Pld:7 Win: 5 Draw: 0 Lost: 2) however with Derrytresk losing their unbeaten start to the season there is still only four points between ourselves and top spot. Our next opponents Drumragh Sarsfields joined Derrytresk on 14 points, with the two Emmetts (Eskra and Brockagh) filling the third and fourth positions.

Both the Seniors and Reserves will travel to Clanabogan this Friday evening (30 July) to face off against Drumragh in Round 9 of ACFL Division 3 and Reserve Division 3.

Reserves throw-in: 6.45pm

Senior throw-in: 8.15pm

Peil na mBan (Ladies Football)

As with their male counterparts our Ladies team had a break from play this week.

Ladies training continues Tuesday and Thursday.

Peil na nÓg (Youth Football)

In the absence of any competitive football at the senior ranks the Club’s stars of the show this week were the Under 13’s who maintained their unbeaten run in Tyrone Under-13 Grade 4B League with a resounding 13 point victory away to West Tyrone rivals Aghyaran Naomh Dabhóg.

In what was described as “brilliant team performance” our young Gaels scored a magnificent 5-11 to their opponents 1-10 to top the table with 17 points (Pld:9 W:8 D:1 L:0). Maith sibh a bhuachaillí !

The lads’ final League game of the season is another West Tyrone derby with Castlederg St. Eugene’s at Páirc Naomh Columba. The Derg lads sitting a solitary point behind Urney on 16 points.

On Saturday our U-7.5s; U-9.5s and U-11.5s made the trip to Gortin St. Patrick’s in the latest round of the Tyrone GAA Go-Games.

Despite depleted numbers at U-9.5 and U-11.5 these young Gaels displayed great spirit, heart and endeavour in their games.

Our Dearcáin Bheaga were again successful in the U-7.5’s side of the contest,

There is always plenty to take away from these games. Always learning!

Also it is very important to highlight that Saturday saw our youngsters kitted out in their new Club jerseys. This is a piece of equipment that has been funded thanks a very, very generous donation to the Club from an anonymous benefactor!

So on behalf of the Youth Committee, the coaches and players it really is a “go raibh mile maith agat” to you.

Remember to keep an eye on our Urney St.Columba’s Facebook Page for training times and dates and newcomers and those returning to the game are always more than welcome.

Bingo and Lotto

The ever popular Urney Drive-In Bingo has returned to the club grounds on Monday night starting at 8.30pm sharp and this also coincides with the return of our “Mini Lock-down Lotto” which provides much needed income for the club.

You can “do your lotto” on-line at www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Urney_GFC/lotto

The current Jackpot is £500 and the cost per lotto line remains at £1. The minimum online entry fee is £5 which can be spread over five lines in one draw or one line for five weeks for example.

This week’s winning Lotto numbers are: 1 – 12 – 19 – 23. There were no Match 4 winners and two Match 3 winners who each receive £25.

GAA Covid Health Questionnaire

It is important to remember that it is of the utmost importance that the GAA Covid Health Questionnaire is completed prior to coming to training and on match days. This applies to players, coaches and managers right across the board. This will remain the case for the foreseeable future. So please complete (or complete for your children) every time.
