Urney St. Columba's – Club Notes W/C 19 July 2021
Adult Football (Peil do Dhaoine Fásta)
The Senior footballers got back to winning ways on Friday night past as they saw off the challenge of West Tyrone rivals, Castlederg at Páirc Naomh Columba. In a well contested derby game it was the Green and Gold who prevailed with a strong seven point victory over our neighbours on a score line of 3-13 to 0-15. Prominent amongst our scorers was Johnny Lafferty with 3-04 and Jamie McAleer weighing in with a well-deserved 0-07.
The win leaves Urney in fourth place in Division Three with 10 points from seven games played (Pld:7 Win: 5 Draw: 0 Lost: 2) with a solitary point separating ourselves and Eskra in third and within two points of second placed Drumragh Sarsfields. So there is still plenty to play for and we remain well in the competitive mix in this Division. Derrytresk remain unbeaten at the top of the table with 100% record – seven from seven.
The Reserve team had no game this week.
The draw for the three County Championships was made last Thursday night (15th July) and in the Junior Championship we have been drawn to play against Fintona Pearses.
Senior Training continues Monday – Wednesday – Friday.
Ladies Football (Peil na mBan)
After a hiatus of over 10 years, the club are delighted to have returned to the senior ranks of Tyrone Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) competing in Junior League B and in their third game recorded a resounding first victory of the season away to Drumquin on Saturday night.
At the final whistle the score was Urney 7-14 v Drumquin 4-09. Maith sibh gach duine!
Ladies training continues Tuesday and Thursday.
Youth Football (Peil na nÓg)
It was a mixed bag of results for our underage Gaels at the weekend as they faced Greencastle at Páirc Naomh Columba in the latest round of the Tyrone GAA Go-Games series.
Our Dearcáin Bheaga were successful in the U-7.5’s side of the contest, however our U-11.5’s found themselves up against a much sterner challenge in their game. There are lots to take away from this game and the coaches are more than delighted with the spirit and determination displayed by their charges. Always learning!
Unfortunately our large panel of U-9.5s did not get a run out this weekend as Greencastle travelled with only two age-group teams, however despite this the children were more than happy to play an “in-house” game between themselves. This age-group is really beginning to come into themselves and the numbers turning out to training on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings is very heartening. Hopefully the numbers will increase as we move forwards and build for the future.
It was also very encouraging to see a large number of family members in attendance on Saturday, positively supporting their children and helping out in little ways around the ground. It might not seem much, but it means a lot to players and coaches.
Keep an eye on our Urney St.Columba’s Facebook Page for training times and dates and newcomers and those returning to the game are always more than welcome.
Bingo and Lotto
The ever popular Urney Drive-In Bingo has returned to the club grounds on Monday night starting at 8.30pm sharp and this also coincides with the return of our “Mini Lock-down Lotto” which provides much needed income for the club.
You can“do your lotto” on-line at www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Urney_GFC/lotto
The current Jackpot is £500 and the cost per lotto line remains at £1. The minimum online entry fee is £5 which can be spread over five lines in one draw or one line for five weeks for example.
GAA Covid Health Questionnaire
It is important to remember that it is of the utmost importance that the GAA Covid Health Questionnaire is completed prior to coming to training and on match days. This applies to players, coaches and managers right across the board. This will remain the case for the foreseeable future. So please complete (or complete for your children) every time.

Tyrone (Tír Eoghain)
Congratulations to the Tyrone senior panel and management on their well-deserved victory over arch-rivals and neighbours Donegal on Sunday, reaching our first Ulster Final since 2017. It’s always nice to beat our noisy neighbours at every possible opportunity and this was a victory to savour. So it’s Ard Mór Oraibh to the Lámh Dheargs in the Ulster Final wherever it is being played (be it Croke Park or Clones).
