Former Galway goalkeeper James Skehill reckons there will be “three or four” retirements from the Tribesmen’s squad following this past weekend’s exit from the All-Ireland senior hurling championship.

Last Saturday’s 1-30 to 3-20 defeat at the hands of Waterford spelled an end to Shane O’Neill’s side’s Liam McCarthy Cup ambitions for 2021 and speculation has been rife since that it could well have been Joe Canning’s last game in a Galway jersey.

The Portumna sharpshooter became the all-time hurling championship top scorer at the weekend, bringing his total up to 27-486, and Skehill is one of those that believes he will retire now.

“I think the big thing today was the Joe thankfully got the record which was a big feat for him and congratulations to him,” Skehill told Off The Ball after Saturday’s clash at Semple Stadium.

“But I am not sure how much time he has left in the Galway jersey. You look at the panel as a whole, I think it is in need of rejuvenation. It is in need of an injection of youth.

“I am not sure what evidence there was today that the same group can challenge for an All-Ireland next year.

“So, I think there is going to be a lot of soul searching done… and I’d say there could be three or four retirements in Galway at this stage.”
