Four-time All-Star footballer Keith Higgins is the new Mayo senior hurling captain.

Manager Derek Walsh has confirmed that his fellow Ballyhaunis clubman will lead the side in Division 2B of the Allianz League and Nicky Rackard Cup this year, assisted by Tooreen’s Stephen Coyne, as vice-captain.

After bringing down the curtain on a brilliant 16-year inter-county football career, in which he also won eight Connacht SFC titles, 36-year-old Higgins decided to throw his lot in with Walsh's squad for 2021.

While he is best known for his football exploits, Higgins has been a key player for the Mayo hurlers, winning a Nicky Rackard Cup in 2016.
