Waterford GAA is in mourning following the death of one of its greatest defenders Austin Flynn.

Flynn was full-back on the last Waterford team to capture All-Ireland SHC honours in 1959, having hurled with the Deise County from 1955 to 1967.

During that period, he’d also help Waterford to three Munster SHC titles as well as a National League crown, marking some of the best players in the game in the likes of Christy Ring and Nickey Rackard.

In 1960, Flynn was full-back on the Munster side which won the Railway Cup and at club level he’d represent his native Abbeyside in four county finals, losing out to Mount Sion on each occasion.

He would be picked at number three again when Waterford GAA revealed its Hurling Team of the Millennium.
