The Downs move through to Westmeath SFC semi-finals

The Downs manager Lar Wall.

The Downs are the first team through to the Westmeath SFC semi-finals after maintaining their 100% record with a hard-fought 1-13 to 2-9 victory over Caulry at Rochfortbridge yesterday.

Lar Wall's charges are now guaranteed top spot in Section A, while on Saturday evening, Coralstown-Kinnegad got the better of Garrycastle 3-13 to 3-12 to set up a winner-takes-all clash against holders St Loman's for the second place on offer in the table, and a semi-final berth. St Loman's defeated town rivals Mullingar Shamrocks 0-19 to 0-11.

A third successive defeat leaves Garrycastle in real danger of missing out on the knockout stages, as well as being demoted to Section B for 2023. Last year's runners-up need to beat The Downs next and hope that fourth-placed Caulry slip up in their meeting with Mullingar Shamrocks - who remain pointless at the bottom - if they're to progress.

Section B leaders Tyrrellspass guaranteed themselves one of the four quarter-final spots after beating Athlone 1-10 to 0-11, while Rosemount are relegated to the intermediate ranks following their 1-7 to 0-7 loss to Moate All-Whites. Despite a 1-9 to 0-8 defeat at the hands of Tang, Killucan's fate is very much in their own hands as they face Tyrrellspass in the final round.
