Ramor United, Mullahoran, Cavan Gaels and Killygarry all booked opening round wins in the Cavan senior football championship this weekend.
Defending champions Ramor United finished strongly on Friday night to see off Kingscourt Stars at Kingspan Breffni, where goals from Jack Brady and Sean Keogan worked the oracle in a 2-11 to 1-9 victory for the Virginia men.
Saturday saw a repeat of the ACFL Division 1 final at the same Cavan Town venue with Cavan Gaels avenging that defeat to Crosserlough with a 0-14 to 0-13 win. In the end, it was a converted mark from Andy Graham that sealed the opening victory for the Gaels in a game which saw Cavan attacker Paddy Lynch making a scoring impact off the bench for the Kilnaleck men.
The same evening saw goals from Cormac O’Reilly, Niall McGahern and Enda O’Reilly netting the goals as Mullahoran were 3-12 to 0-14 winners over Ballinagh in Cornafean.
On Sunday, Laragh United welcomed last year’s intermediate winners Butlersbridge to life in the senior championship with a 3-17 to 0-13 trouncing while Conor Finnegan’s 50th minute goal proved key for Lacken in their 1-11 to 0-13 win against Lavey.
The weekend’s final senior clash would see somewhat of an upset when last year’s runners-up Gowna were defeated by Killygarry.
County men Conor Smith and Darragh Lovett supplied the goals for the Crubany outfit as it finished 2-11 to 1-12 at Kingspan Breffni.
