"Potentially, it looks like a David and Goliath type match"

Former Tipperary manager Mick Ryan says the timing of Sunday’s Munster club senior hurling championship quarter-final between Ballygunner and Kilruane MacDonaghs “is a bit unfair” on both teams.

All-Ireland champions Ballygunner will be playing their first competitive match in two months since defeating Mount Sion to clinch their ninth consecutive Waterford SHC crown, while Kilruane are back in action seven days after securing their first Tipperary SHC title in 37 years.

Speaking to Tipp FM ahead of the clash at Walsh Park (1.30pm), Ryan said he hopes to see Tipperary gaels making the trip to the Deise County to support the county champions this weekend.

“It’s a bit unfair to both sides in my view,” he stated. “It’s too short for Kilruane MacDonaghs because what shape are those bodies going to be in after two titanic weeks. But I suppose the lay-off for nine weeks for Ballygunner is just huge. But it’s a strategic decision they’ve made down in Waterford.

“These are the reigning All-Ireland champions. Potentially, it looks like a David and Goliath type match and particularly with the timing of the game. But I think as many of us Tipp people should get down – make the effort to get into the cars and go down and support Kilruane MacDonaghs. They’re very worthy of our support.”
