Drumcliffe/Rosses Point club notes

September 21, 2020

If it’s possible to be gutted and, at the same time, immensely proud, Sunday evening was it. The result at Markievicz Park went Tourlestrane’s way and our congrats to them. Five-in-a-row is a fine and historic achievement. But they were pushed all the way by a terrific bunch of footballers who came closer than most sides in recent seasons to lifting the Owen B Hunt Cup. The messages of appreciation for what the senior players and management have done for the community this county final week are still coming in – several from across the globe. Head up lads. Beimid ar ais.

The team are back in action on Saturday when they host Owenmore Gaels in the Benson Cup semi-final at 5pm.

A big thank-you to all the backroom team of volunteers and helpers who decked the Point and Drumcliffe areas in wonderful colour in the run-up to the final. We will, of course, be keeping it up for this weekend’s Sligo LGFA minor ‘A’ football championship final when DRP take on Tourlestrane again. We wish Barry O’Sullivan and his players the very best of luck in this final.

There was a socially-distanced ‘Supermacs’ party on the Green at Rosses Point on Saturday evening as our talented girls under-12 football team returned home with the county cup, following their thrilling 9-7 win over a fine Eoghan Rua side in Tubbercurry. It was a lovely finish to a memorable campaign. Congrats to Paul McDonagh, Sean Carroll and the rest of the management team and players on a fabulous season.  It was a particularly proud evening for Michael (Snr) and Margaret Carroll who were there to see their three grand-daughters Lucy, Caitlin and Emma receive county medals.

The club extends its deepest sympathy to the Regan family of Drum Road and Clooneen, following the passing of Winnie at the weekend. No doubt, she would have been very proud of the impressive role her grand-daughter Katie played in Saturday’s under-12 final success.

We would also like to extend our condolences to Louise McCabe (Rosses Point) and the Raftery family, following the passing of her Dad Brian last week.

Hard luck to our under-14 hurlers who lost out to an impressive Western Gaels team in the county final, played under the lights of Scarden last Friday evening. There is much to be taken from a fine season, despite the final result.

We are seeing a lot of Tourlestrane these days. Our minor hurlers host them this Tuesday evening in the championship at Oxfield. Throw-in is at 6:30pm.

Our boys under-14 footballers play St Mary’s next Sunday at 12pm in the county ‘A’ championship semi-final. The venue was still to be confirmed at the time of writing. Our under 16 team will play Tubbercurry in the Expert Sligo under-16 ‘A’ shield final later this week. We wish both teams the very best of luck.
