Substitute Tony Lavin proved the hero as Strokestown edged a 0-11 to 0-10 win over Boyle to claim the Roscommon senior football championship title for the first time in an even two decades earlier today.

Lavin kicked the winner in the fifth minute of injury-time at Dr Hyde Park, where there were 5,500 in attendance and wild celebrations followed after the final whistle.

Both teams had suffered serious injuries during the first-half, with Boyle’s Cian McKeon and Strokestown’s Paddy Brogan both having to be withdrawn, and it saw nine minute of injury-time – at the end of which the sides were level on 0-6 apiece.

The frees of Colin Goldrick and Donie Smith saw Boyle open up a two-point lead early on in the resumption and, despite their opponents pulling two points back, it was Smith that kept his side ahead with is third point from play.

Strokestown took back the lead via points from Colin Compton and marksman Diarmuid McGann (free) and Smith’s last score looked like forcing extra time before Lavin’s late intervention.
