Padraig Pearses will face Knockmore in next month’s Connacht club senior football championship final after edging out Mountbellew-Moylough by 1-8 to 1-7 this afternoon.
The Roscommon champions came from behind to snatch victory, with substitute Tom Butler proving the match winner, and there’d be ugly scenes at the finish at Dr Hyde Park that saw Mayo referee Jerome Henry needing an escort off the pitch after being challenged by some of the Galway contingent.
It was Mountbellew-Moylough that led by 1-3 to 1-2 at the halfway stage after Barry McHugh had hit the net for them and, while that strike was cancelled out by Paul Carey on 22 minutes, Colin Ryan’s point gave them the one-point advantage at the break.
The Galway champions outscored their opponents 0-4 to 0-1 after the restart but the home side hit back with points from Carey and Conor and Ronan Daly to level matters.
The sides were still all square when Matthew Barrett picked up a second yellow card for Mountbellew and McHugh would fail to be awarded a mark moments before Butler’s winner, incensing the Galway men as their Roscommon counterparts ran out one-point winners.
Pat Flanagan's men now face the Mayo champions in their second ever Connacht club SFC final on January 9th in Ballina.
