The Kinnitty Under 14 team

Under 12s

Monday evening in scorching heat our girls travelled to Coolderry to play Naomh Brid.  Such was the heat that umbrellas were used on the sideline to shelter some from the sun as both teams took on their final instructions from their coaching teams in any shade that could be found before taking to the field.  Before that however it was discovered that a referee had not been booked for the game so the ever-reliable Kevin Dooley stood in to take charge.

Our girls started excellently with Aoibhinn Dooley opening the scoring with a well taken point.  She followed this up with another a few minutes later to extend Kinnitty’s lead before Amber Mortimer added to it to leave our girls leading by 9 points to no score at the first half water break.

Aoibhinn continued her excellent shooting in the second quarter when she scored a goal before Naomh Brid opened their account with a well taken point to leave Kinnitty leading1-3 (10 points) to 0-1 (3 points)

Both teams used the half time break to take on some much needed water before coming back onto the still sun drenched pitch.  Kinnitty were now playing up the slope on the lower Coolderry pitch so they were prepared for a challenging half of camogie.  The half time break seemed to help Naomh Brid as they soon hit their first point of the half but Kinnitty soon replied when Aoibhinn found the net.  Naomh Brid continued to reduce the lead when the hit another three pointer before Amber cancelled this out when she hit over to leave our girls leading by 7 points at the water break.

The last quarter proved to be a one littered with some excellent scores, starting with Naomh Brid hitting the Kinnitty net but the visitor’s lead was soon extended when Emma Robinson pointed and this was followed up by Amber doing likewise.  While Kinnitty had a comfortable lead the Naomh Brid girls continued to battle on and got their reward with a point.  Michaela Blake responded by hitting a goal for her team before Naomh Brid hit another excellent score.  The last point of the evening was a super score by Amber Mortimer who hit over from out on the wing to leave the final score reading Naomh Brid 1-5 (16 points), Kinnitty (21 points).

Well done to all the girls on an excellent win

Under 14

Our under 14s had their second championship match of the year on Wednesday evening against St Cillians in Carrig.  Prior to the match, Offaly Camogie gave clubs the option to postpone fixtures as a result of the hot weather but rather than postpone the match it was decided to push back the throw in time to 8 pm when temperatures would hopefully be somewhat more bearable.  Our girls were slightly hampered before the throw in when it was discovered that we would not have any substitutes due to girls being unavailable which is always likely during the holidays.

Once the game got underway Kinnitty settled well and opened the scoring when Aoibhe Longworth hit the ball to the net.  Cillians replied with two points before Katie Standish hit over and Aoibhe hit her second goal of the evening to leave Kinnitty leading by 5 points at the water break.

The water break did Cillians good as they started the next quarter by scoring the first two points, but Kinnitty restored their 5 point advantage when Amber Mortimer hit two points and followed up by another from Aoibhe.  Cillians were piling on the pressure however and were rewarded with a goal with the last puck of the half to leave the half time score reading St Cillians 1-4, Kinnitty 2-4.

The girls took on some much needed iced refreshments at half time thanks to some great thinking parents.  The match restarted with a bang with the teams trading goals, with Aoibhe completing her hat trick of goals for Kinnitty before Cillians scored another to level the match at 3-4 each.  Cillians were then awarded a very soft penalty which they converted and followed up with another goal a minute after and suddenly our girls were in trouble.  Amber Mortimer helped reduce the deficit by scoring a point before the water break.

Into the last quarter and again Cillians opened the scoring with a point.  Amber continued her excellent point scoring when she then hit 3 in a row.  Kinnitty then piled on the pressure on the Cillians goal in seach of an equalising goal but it was not to be and our girls came up just short losing on a scoreline of St Cillians 5-5, Kinnitty 3-8.  Despite losing though the girls should be … and were applauded and commended by their coaches and followers on a fantastic performance.  Well done again girls

Under 10 blitz

Well done to our under 10 girls who had another outstanding blitz in Killeigh on Saturday morning when they played St Sinchills, Shinrone and St Cillians.  As was the pattern throughout all of last week, temperatures were high but that didn’t stop the girls in green and white playing some excellent camogie and taking some great scores.  Keep up the great work girls
