Tullamore Court Hotel Senior B Football Championship Semi Final.

Gracefield 3—9  Ballycumber 0—11.

The decision to issue a  “ Black Card “ to a Ballycumber player before half time had a major bearing on the result of this contest. The game was  played in a very sporting manner and at a high tempo and was evenly contested. Ballycumber got the better start and with points from Keith Lawler, Joe Lowry, Adrian Kelly and two from Cormac Quinn were leading by 0—5 to 0—2 when a change in the Gracefield full forward line had the desired result for them and they added 1—2  in a few minutes to lead 1—4 to 0—5. Despite being down to 14 players Ballycumber drew level at half time with points from Keith Lawler and Adrian Kelly.

Adrian Kelly gave Ballycumber a short lived lead with a point on the restart. Gracefield took full advantage of their extra man and put 2 -2 on the board to give themselves a commanding lead. Keith Lawler registered another point after a long run by Emmet Kelly. Luke Gavin Mangan added another point after a good passing movement and a couple of half chances for goals did not materialise. Keith Lawler capped an impressive display with Ballycumber’s final point. Gracefield scored three points to wrap up the game and progress to face Durrow in the final.

In this very strange year it was brilliant to see our team in a county semi final and it was a just reward for the level of preparation put in by the players and the management team of Colm Quinn, Ciaran Grennan, Paul Gavin, Cathal Daly, Conal Mahon, Daniel Boland and Andrew Minnock.

Shamrocks 4—13  Ballycumber 0---6.

The management team of Vinny Minnock, Stevie Quinn and Simon Casey worked wonders to put a team on the pitch. Because numbers available to them were limited all year and with players required for the senior B panel who were contesting the semi final three hours later it was a victory in itself to fulfil the fixture. The players epitomised all that is best about playing football for enjoyment. Facing a young Shamrocks side who were full of running, the Ballycumber players, many of whom have given many years of service to the Club, tried their best until the end.

Ballycumber GAA Club wish to thank Anthony Condron and Shamrocks GAA Club for agreeing to our request to bring the throw in back to 11 o’clock instead of 12 noon as arranged on County fixture list.

Best of luck to Brosna Gaels who will take on Birr in the Relegation Final in Bord na Mona O’Connor Park on Saturday at 1 oclock and to St Manchan Gaels under 17 footballers in the A Shield Final against Na Fianna in Rahan at 11 oclock. Both St Manchan Gaels teams will contest semi final on Sunday morning. The B team will face Cloghan in Ferbane at 12 o’clock and the C team will line out against Birr also in Ferbane at 10.30 am.

History.

Ballycumber History Group are collecting historical facts about the Boher and Castlearmstrong areas. The group would welcome any information and photographs of Boher Church and Schools, Boher Hall, Guinan’s Field, Castlearmstrong and Castletown Park.
