Buggy Coaches Division 5 Football League Final.

Ballycumber 1—14  Gracefield 1—13.

The Ballycumber team managed by Vinny Minnock and Declan Daly staged a remarkable recovery to win the Division 5 Final in Cappincur on Sunday evening. Andrew Grennan opened the scoring for Ballycumber but Gracefield were moving the ball very well throughout the pitch and soon drew level and then score a well worked goal. Shaun Creevy pointed a free from 40metres to narrow the gap. Gracefield extended the lead with two excellent points from play. The team captain Shaun scored a point from play and again Gracefield replied with a point. Conrad Casey scored a point from a free and Fergal Daly kicked a great point under severe pressure. Gracefield added another point from play. Mel Guinan who was the team’s leading scorer throughout the league got his name on the score sheet with a point from a free awarded for a foul on John Corcoran. Gracefield finished out the half with two more points from play to keep their record of getting all their scores from play in the first half. 1—7 to 0—6.

Gracefield extended their lead with two more points from play soon after the change of ends. Leo Guinan made a great save to deflect the ball onto the crossbar and it rebounded to safety.  Ballycumber got more possession of the ball playing down the pitch in the second half and after a difficult first half Colin Daly stormed into the game and scored a very good point from a difficult angle. John Corcoran from play and a converted free by Conrad Casey narrowed the gap to three points. Karl Daly intercepted a wayward clearance and set off on a run, he passed to John Corcoran and took the return pass and delivered a perfect pass to Andrew Grennan who had made up more than 60 metres to be in position to drive the ball to the back of the net. Gracefield regained the lead with two points from play and again Ballycumber drew level with points from play by Colin Daly and Shaun Creevy who had received a good pass from David Ayres, Conrad pointed a difficult free after a foul on Marcus Keena, who ran himself into the ground making tackles and carrying the ball to relieve pressure. Again Gracefield drew level with another point from play. Conrad pointed another free to regain the lead and a wonderful point by Shaun Creevy after a spectacular catch by John Corcoran gave Ballycumber a two point lead. Gracefield got their first point from a free to reduce the margin to the minimum and they had a chance to draw level but the effort drifted wide of the posts. The final whistle sounded as Leo Guinan kicked the ball out.

Ballycumber already short the services of Tom Corcoran, Paul Kelly and Kenneth Delaney lost Full back Ronan Faherty before the throw in and during the game lost Michael Egan to injury and goal scorer Andrew Grennan who received a harsh black card. The small panel was fully extended but were able for the challenge and secured the victory.
