Monaghan club to return to home pitch four years after devastating sinkhole damage

August 20, 2022

Magheracloone GAA is the home club of former Monaghan star Tommy Freeman.

Magheracloone Mitchels return their home pitch this evening (Saturday) for the first time in four years after it was destroyed by sinkholes.

The Monaghan club was left devastated in 2018 after massive sinkholes ripped through its playing field which also saw enormous cracks emerge in its clubhouse.

Within weeks of the damage, Magheracloone were relegated from the senior football championship, although they have since returned to the topflight ranks in the Farney County after capturing the Ulster club intermediate crown in 2019.

Now, four years on from the disaster, the club is set to play its first ever match on its new pitch when they take on Doohamlet in a challenge game.

“It's coming up on four years since there was subsidence and we lost our grounds,” chairman Francis Jones told Northern Sound Radio yesterday.

“So, for the last four years we have had no home pitch. We have been on the road to pitches here, there and everywhere.

“That is why tomorrow night with our first home game on our new pitch is so exciting.”
