Longford V Meath

(Oldest Posts First)

Hi fellow Meath posters. With the League 2018 now over for both our counties, I was wondering what the view point is in the county for the opening round of the Leinster Championship against ourselves?

I think the general consensus within Longford is that we missed a huge opportunity to get promoted having played well throughout the campaign. Potentially robbed of promotion and a league final by two decisions made by Ulster Refs against Ulster Opposition (Lost by 1 point against Armagh & Fermanagh both in the last kicks of the games). On saying that we only drew with Sligo when we should have put them to bed.

Confidence is high enough for the game against meath as we have, as a team, played well so far this year, even withg some of our better players missing for some rounds and we have a good mix of team bonding, experience and youth in our set up. This along with hopefully home advantage( Progress depending on repair works to our main stand) gives us optimism for the game. That being said, our record in the Leinster Championship over the last decade is deplorable so we would not be as naïve to go into the game over confident. Would love to see a good, entertaining game of football to try show other provinces we can still offer something to a Championship in Leinster.

Good post. I will tell you no one in Meath ( players management , supporters) are looking beyond the longford game. It is a very tough game for Meath playing Longford on their home patch. Longford would give any team a run for their money playing at home.
As a Meath person I hope Meath improve between now and the start of the championship which should be enough to see us over the line hopefully.
Would take a one point win. I also hope it is a cracking game also. Longford actually play football unlike some Ulster teams so should be good.

Yes i agree and id say you are speaking for 90% of supporters here. We aren't looking past this game. Its going to be a tough one no doubt and we need to massively improve to get the win here. To walk away from this game with a 1 point win is where im looking at aswell. This game is all that's been talked about at home here, more than the Louth game. We need to be in top gear going into this championship and get this win against Longford. I believe we can do it, well we have the capability & i expect a very competitive game between these two counties, nobody wants going into championship with a loss.

In fairness, we do try and play each game. I remember maybe 3 seasons ago we had beaten offaly (Could be wrong) and got the 'reward' of playing the Dubs in Croker. We were absolutely hockeyed off the pitch. Before the game we all said that if we could keep it to 15 points or under wed take that!!!! but the only thing is we actually went out man for man and tried to play ball!

As most will acknowledge, give us anybody in the qualifiers and we will give them a game but we just have such a a bad record against teams in the Leinster who we would be pretty much on a par with- Offaly, Laois, Wexford to name some we have lost to over the years.

While on current form and certain factors working to our advantage I would fancy us to progress, Meath have a serious footballing pedigree and scope to improve between now and then. The panel we work off each year literally is the best we can call upon (Unless certain players remove themselves or don't join the panel-small majority) due to a small pool available, so if we lose one/two to injury we are at a loss. Great club teams, structures resources available in Meath it is such a shame that ye are not challenging at the business end of the season more frequently.

A good entertaining game is what we all dream of as a trouncing/ poor game would do neither rof us any benefit!

I think we will see a good entertaining game of football at Pearse Park. I see James McGivney has made a quick u turn on his decision to opt off the county squad. Will Sean McCormack be fit to play?

McGivney has been out of favour this season so far for whatever reason, But I rate him very highly and if his absence from the starting team isnt impacting results hes a great player to have come in as a sub! McCormack is another class act as he is definatley one of the best free takers in the Leinster Championship, I couldn't say for sure if he will be fully fit to play just depends on if his rehab plays ball.

What's the story on Glennon Brothers Pearce Park?? Is work ongoing there at the minute, I saw a piece in the Indo today where the Longford secretary said the game would go ahead there whether work was completed or not and the capacity would be 8000, now I've no issue there but is seating going to be available? I'm delighted to see Longford getting the Pearse Park issued sorted but I also hope that supporters that want seats will have them on the day. No matter where the game would be played Meath will have a tough, tough time dispatching this very useful Longford outfit.

No one is looking beyond this game. I would call it 50/50.

I think basic works were being carried out as much as possible during the league, and now that it is over they will be going at it full pelt. It's an absolute disgrace that 1) It happened in the first place as the stand was only completed in 2006 and 2) that it has taken the guts of 2/3 years to reach a decision to repair the damage done. we have been without a seated stand and had to forfeit home advantage a number of times during this period.

I honestly couldn't say when it will be completed or what stage it would be at come the game day, you know how these things go. the only seats available are in the stand on that side as the other 3 sides are all terraced. Unless the County board arrange for bucket seats or something to be put in for the game as it would not be fair to expect older patrons or people with disabilities to stand for the entire game.

On saying that, a full capacity of 8000 in the tight confines of only 3 sides may make for a more feisty atmosphere if the game delivered?
