Will Meath contest an all Ireland this decade?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Don't give up hope just yet. Our minor teams in '16 and '17 were better than Dublin and probably the best in Leinster but got unlucky. Our u17's are undisputedly the best team in Leinster and perhaps 2nd best in the country. Given long enough, I've full faith in Andy McEntee to take us there. I don't think we're as talentless as some users suggest. However I believe we are in complete disarray in some respects such as the formats of our club championship. More can certainly be done and the old style mentality of many club delegates is our downfall. If we don't get with the times the opportunity to give these young lads the best chance of success will pass us by.

Replying To subzero:  "Some good points Royalblufill. The worrying thing for Meath regarding clubs bordering Dublin is the tendency for the better players to play for their clubs in Meath but play their underage county football with Dublin. This has happened with a number of players from Ashbourne and Ratoath. For the clubs themselves it is an even bigger worry when the more promising players decide to transfer to their parents clubs in Dublin after being brought through the under age system in their Meath clubs, There should be rules in the GAA that prohibit this."
I know this happened with Mick Deegan's young lad with Ashbourne - I don't know about Ratoath - Dara Kelly went to Dublin underage hurling but has comeback to Meath. You re right though - it isn't right that a club should bring a young lad through and then they switch county! Not sure if you heard Sean Cavanagh being interview the other day - he basically said the biggest challenge was that the Dublin lads don't hold down full time jobs but have plenty of sponsorship deals (cars/boots etc) - I am sure teh Meath lads don't have that! Sounds like amateurs competing against pro's!

Shane Clayton won an All Ireland with Kilmacud and he played underage with Ratoath up until U15 or U16. Glen O'Reilly was in the same team but then transferred to Na Fianna. Both these players won a Leinster minor title with Dublin.
I always laugh when people point to the big increase in population in the likes of Meath, Kildare etc. recently and ask why the senior teams haven't greatly improved because of this. Where did the majority of these new arrivals come from? You only had to look at the attire of people on busses from Dublin coming into Ashbourne/Ratoath on Sunday evening to know the answer. Most of these people and their kids would never have any intention of playing for their home county.

still if you raise your kids in rataoth/ash/dunboyne and you start them of in those clubs from an early age and they become good enough, they should be playing for meath.

Dublin have no qualms about poaching players from other Counties , while Meath , Kildare , Wicklow, etc appear to have a "no we wont go there attitude " Why is that . Andy McEntee was lambasted a Co. board level for trying to turn the flow around with Lowndes, O Connor . What's that about ?
The parish rule no longer exists in the larger / border urban clubs . Yet all of our County Board resources are poured into these areas of high populations .
Dunboyne ,St Colmcilles , St Pats , all have professional GDO's onboard ( Not sure about Dunshaughlin) . They all have Dublin satellite club status in Meath . Yet they soak up the funds and resources from the rest of the County .....Is this benefitting Meath football in general .

I was raised in Dublin and played in Dublin. My young lads are both involved with the county development squads in Meath - I wouldn't have it any other way!

Harry Rooney will not be back with Meath next year. Again your 'sources' are wrong or misinformed.

Was McEntee lambasted at county board level for trying to recruit those players?? When did this occur and who was responsible for this lambasting? Genuinely I would love to know more detail on this as obviously there are still people at county board level who need to ask themselves serious questions if this is true.....

And your sources for Rooney not returning? Rooney stated he was taking a year off to travel. When did he announce different?

I'd like to know the same. I know a few on here didn't like it.

Rooney needs to b got back and if they knew Jones was going this year we should have given I suppose Flanagan and who ever is back up for midfield more game time in league anyway.more experience would help when Jones gone.
