Trim took the J.M food Services Div. 2 league honours with a deserved seven point win over Moynalvey in the final played played at Summerhill on Sunday morning July 20th.
Moynalvey 1-12
Trim 4-10
A repeat of the opening round of the league which ended in a draw saw Moynalvey and Trim face off in the Div. 2 decider at Summerhill on Sunday morning with the senior side deservedly taking the honours having lead from throw in to the full time whistle.
Trim opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a point and three minutes later had the their first green flag raised when Tom Carmody netted, 1-1 to 0-0.
Moynalvey eventually opened their account with an Adam Murphy free in the 12th minute, which was followed up by Trim points from James Toher and Tom Carmody to make it 1-3 to 0-1 with seventeen minutes played.
A second Adam Murphy free for Moynalvey in the 19th minute was followed up by 1-2 from the town side, a tom Carmody free, a ’45 from Sean Foley and the goal from wing back Eoin Sweeney who latched onto a breaking ball to find the corner of the Moynalvey net, 2-5 to 0-2 with 24 minutes gone.
A third Murphy free followed by a Cillian O’Sullivan effort from play were followed by the final point of the half from a Tom Carmody free meaning Trim held a commanding 2-6 to 0-4 lead when referee Stephen Cregan blew his whistle for half time.
A Moynalvey revival looked on the cards in the third quarter as they outscored Trim eight points to one in that period to narrow the deficit to the minimum at one stage. Three two pointers in that period accounted largely for reducing the margin.
First off it was a two pointer from play when half time substitute Mark O’Sullivan split the Trim uprights with the outside of the right boot from the right wing. A David McLoughlin free was countered by a Tom Carmody free for Trim, before McLoughlin sent over a two point free with the aid of the wind at his back, a third two pointer this time a free from Adam Murphy which was followed up by a McLoughlin point from play left just the point between the sides nine minutes into the second half, 2-7 to 0-12.
Ultimately, Moynalvey’s comeback momentum was burst with the concession of two goals within the 43rd minute, the first of those saw Tadhg Carty claim a breaking ball on the edge of the Moynalvey square and rifle to the net and the second a brilliantly finished goal to the top corner from an acute angle by Sean Foley to extend Trim’s advantage back out to seven, 4-7 to 0-12.
An excellently struck ’45 from full forward David Lernihan extended Trim’s advantage out to eight, before Moynalvey raised their only green flag of the game when Cillian O’Sullivan buried to Eoin O’Reilly’s net, leaving it 4-8 to 1-12 with ten minutes remaining.
However, that O’Sullivan goal proved to be Moynalvey’s last score and two further Trim points saw Ken Robinson’s side run out seven point winners on a 4-10 to 1-12 score line to claim Div. 2 league honours.
Next up for Moynalvey is the first round of the IFC at the same venue against Ballivor in a fortnight.
