St. Declan’s NS Ashbourne withstood a brave Ratoath SNS second half fightback to win their very first Allianz Meath Cumann na mBunscol Boys Division 1 football title in the third game of the day at Pairc Tailteann. PHOTOS

Cian Flanagan and Conor Doyle had the Ratoath school on the scoreboard first with quick points but from there on St. Declan’s dominated and went in at the break 2-6 to 0-4 in front with their goals coming from Donnacha Paget and Patrick Toth. Corner forward Toth also added three points in that opening 25 minutes.

Cornerback Darragh Murphy extended their lead with an early goal in the second half and with ten minutes gone the Ashbourne school held a 3-8 to 0-6 advantage and looked good for victory but Rataoth had other ideas. Points from Cian Comerford and Jamie Kelly along with 1-1 from Cian Flanagan narrowed the gap. The winners responded with another Toth goal before Ratoath made their final push. Flanagan and Conor Doyle raised a green flag and along with a Joseph hatch point the lead was down to a goal. St. Declan’s defence held firm in the closing minutes and held on to claim a historic win.
