Camogie: First win for Royals

June 27, 2022

Meath Jane Dolan with Grainne Noone Kildare during the All Intermediate camogie championship at Rathmolyon

Meath 2-18 Kildare 2-08

Having just edged Kildare in the Leinster Final by 2 points a few weeks ago and a must win game for Meath they went into this fixture knowing they had to be on top of their game.

Sinead Hackett opened the scoring for Meath with a well taken point, Meath were to register 4 more points before Kildare’s Emer Reilly got her team on the score board. The majority of the remaining scores in this half were scored from frees, and while Kildare were questioning a foul against them Jane Dolan was settling herself to take the free,  picking her spot in the top corner of the Kildare net, and on the referees whistle she hit that spot perfectly past a unorganised Kildare defence.

Half time: Meath 1-09 Kildare 0-06

Kildare came out in the second half with much more determination and fight and a early goal was their reward. Meath knew if they didn’t regroup now that Kildare would avail of the opportunity to take control of the game. Jane Dolans 3 consecutive points were balanced by a well taken Roisin Force goal that left the fully stretched Maggie Randal no chance to clear. A point from Kildare Leah Sutton now left a 2-point margin.

Meath were not availing of the strong wind advantage and Kildare were suddenly gaining momentum. When a badly cleared Kildare ball landed in the path of Amy Gaffney, she made no mistake in punishing the error, connecting perfectly and drove the sliotar into the Kildare goals, this was the boost needed and the turning point for Meath as the closed the games with a frenzy of scores with subs Áine Mc Enerney and Aedin Slattery both contributing to the scores.

17 scores were converted from frees, 11 to Meath’s advantage, next up is Kilkenny in Pairc Tailteann Saturday 02/07/2022.
