U21 HC semi final: Trim advance as goals seal Kildalkey's fate

Trim's Mikey Cole

Trim 5-11; Kildalkey 1-10

A brace of goals by Trim’s Mikey Cole either side of the opening water break was decisive in this local derby between near neighbours Trim and Kildalkey.

On a bright and crisp December morning, at Fr. Plunkett Memorial Park,  there was a great sense of anticipation in both camps with the home side still full of their Senior counterpart’s success in the County final while the visitors were still smarting from their semi-final defeat by the same outfit.

Trim registered the opening score when Josh Harris fired over within seconds of the throw-in. Kildalkey hit back with a double of frees from dead ball specialist Nicky Potterton, who would account for 1-9 of his side’s final tally. James Murray restored Trim’s advantage with a pointed free and followed up with another fine effort from play.

Trim’s overall team play was proving critical and after fine interplay between Andy Dinan and Kevin ‘Lefty’ Lennon the final pass fell to Mikey Cole who gave Kildalkey ‘keeper Conor Lyons no chance with a blistering strike to the back of the net.

The game had barely resumed after the first water break when Cole found the target again after fine work by Josh Harris. A third goal, this time from Kevin Lennon, could almost have signalled the end of the game as a competitive affair but Nicky Potterton had other ideas and struck with three successful frees and a converted ’65 to add to Matthew Cuddy’s score from play.

Half time: Trim 3-4;  Kildalkey 0-7

Both sides started tentatively after the resumption and it was seven minutes before Joey Cole opened his scoring for the visitors.  Barely a minute later brother Mikey completed his hat trick when again finding the back of the net following a fine catch from Josh Harris and referee Niall Burke’s advantage play. Another Joey Cole effort, this time a pointed free, stretched Trim’s advantage.

Nicky Potterton pointed a further free for the home side but Dylan Farrell quickly responded with one of the best scores of the match. Another fine bout of Trim interplay between Andrew Gibney and Kevin Lennon resulted with a final pass to James Murray who made no mistake with a shot to the back of the Kildalkey net which virtually sealed his side’s victory even though the final quarter was still looming. Trim 5-7; Kildalkey 0-8.

The final quarter was academic even though Nicky Potterton added 1-2, the goal coming with virtually the last play of the game. In between James Murray added another pair of pointed frees with further points from play from Mikey Cole and Kevin Lennon.

Trim now eagerly look forward to next Sunday’s Final (Dec 19) in Dunganny against Clann na nGael who surprised favourites Ratoath in the other semi-final.
