Leinster club IFC: Impressive Trim advance

Trim 1-14 St. Fechins 2-7

Trim advanced to the quarter final of the Leinster club IFC with an impressive win over Louth champions St. Fechins in slippy underfoot conditions at Ashbourne.

Trim dominated possession and the opened up a 0-5 to 0-2 lead by the first water break. Aaron Lynch got the scoreboard working with a pointed free. The talented attacker raised another two flags in the opening 15. Alan Douglas and James Toher completed the tally.

The second quarter began at a very lively pace and St Fechins thought they had a goal but the post came to Trim’s rescue. The Meath champions went up the field and Alan Douglas was on hand to finish a great move for the games opening goal. Daire Lynch increased Trim’s lead a minute later but the Louth champions were back in the game with a Paul Matthews goal.

Douglas and Rob Bourke restored a five point lead, 1-8 to 1-3, before full back Luke Moran received a second yellow card and Trim were reduced to 14 men as the first half went into injury time.

Trim extended their lead to six points, 1-12 to 1-6, at the second water break with some outstanding scores from Aaron Lynch (2), Mikey Cullen and the brilliant Ciaran Caulfield.

With Ciaran O’Rourke, Rob Bourke, Toher  and Douglas dominating Kevin Reilly’s charges kept control of the final quarter and along with some great points from Lynch and Toher (2) a seven point gap was opened up. St. Fechins scorer in chief Ryan Walsh pulled a goal back for the visitors with the last kick of the game.

Trim now play the Kilkenny SFC winners in the quarter final.
