St. Michaels Claire Halpin breaks up this Donaghmore Ashbourne attack during the opening round of the Meath IFC at Carlanstown

St. Michaels 2-11, Donaghmore Ashbourne 7-09

Donaghmore Ashbourne started confidently in this opening round of the senior championship in Carlanstown on Sunday evening when they opened their account with a goal after only four minutes play. They pushed on with two further minors in what was a low scoring opening quarter with Marion Farrelly the only player to hit the target for the St. Michaels girls.

Sinead McCormack opened the second quarter with four minors in quick succession and a free from Seona Lynch which sailed over the keepers head into the net left the teams level after 27 minutes play however Donaghmore Ashbourne closed out the half stronger bagging their second major in the 28th minute to lead 2-05 to 1-05 at the interval.

A Marion Farrelly point after she cut through the visitors defence reduced the deficit to two however five goals in a five minute spell for Donaghmore Ashbourne put an end to the St. Michaels challenge and although Sinead McCormack (1-0) and Alicia Curtis (0-1) hit the target they were still left with a massive hill to climb at the second water break as they trailed by 2-07 to 7-05.

Farrelly, McCormack and Curtis all added points in the fourth quarter but they were all cancelled out by the winners.
