Corn Na Boinne: Curtis to the fore as Rathkenny record first win

Rathkenny's Keith Curtis

Rathkenny 4-12 Clann na Gael 1:08

Rathkenny recorded their first win of their Corn na Bóinne campaign on a warm Wednesday evening where they were boosted by the return of county panelist Keith Curtis who fired a hattrick of goals over the hour.

Rathkenny started brightly with wing back Niall ‘Stosh’ Brannigan raiding forward to point and Curtis firing to the net twice in quick succession inside the first 15 minutes. The 2nd goal coming after great work from Will Gore to intercept the Clann na Gael kickout. Rathkenny could not sustain their impressive start after the water break and Clann na Gael’s strong running from deep brought them roaring back into the game. A trademark score from the outside of Brian Meade’s right boot was the only highlight of this period for the Raths which ended in Rathkenny leading by 4 points at half time.

Disaster struck for Rathkenny as they conceded a goal straight after half time after yet another running move through the hands from Clann na Gael. Although missed chances continued to be a problem for the Raths they did rediscover some scoring form after the break with Curtis scoring 2 points in quick succession. Brian Meade then located Caolach Halligan with a long raking pass and Halligan dispatched the ball low to the net to put Rathkenny clear. The Rathkenny rearguard performed admirably throughout the game and were well marshalled by Stephen Crosbie and Keith Timmons.

Rathkenny finished the last quarter strongly with Curtis cooly completing his hattrick after great determination from substitute Adam Byrne and Andrew Bellew also slotting over a fine point to cap off a great team move in what proved to be a fruitful journey to Athboy for the Rathkenny men. Rathkenny also wish a speedy recovery to Jack Gore who sustained a nasty injury during the game and hope to see him back on the pitch soon.
