Eric Callaghan St. Vincents

Moynalty 1-11  St. Vincent’s 1-14

On Wednesday 16th June, we had an exciting finish to this match in Moynalty on another lovely evening for football. With a half time score of Moynalty 0-4 to St. Vincent’s 1-9 you would have taught the game almost wrapped up but the last quarter rally from Moynalty made it a much tighter affair.

The game started with a point from Moynalty followed by a goal from St. Vincent’s in the third minute as Leo Corry, St. Vincent’s man of the match, found Eric Callaghan free in front of goal and he shot to the net.  Jack Byrne was the next to get a point for St. Vincent’s. The next 2 points for St. vincent’s came off goal chances for right half back Gary Tuite, with Eoin Corry getting the blocked ball for a point and Eric Callaghan scoring from the 45, after a great save from Moynalty goalkeeper. The score was now 0-3 v 1-3. St Vincents really found their form then and went on to score the next 5 points. Nigel Hand getting 4 of these (3f) and Eoghan Corry adding another. Moynalty stopped the rot with a point from a free, only for Eric Callaghan to cancel out in the 24th minute. Then a crazy few minutes before half time saw both teams have players dismissed for second yellows. For St. Vincent’s it was Eric Callaghan who got his marching orders. Half time score was 0-4 v 1.9.

St. vincent’s scored the first point of the second half with the returning Bob Tallon opening his account. 4 points for Moynalty separated by a Nigel Hand free and followed by a Leo Corry point from play, made the score 0-8 v 1-12 at the last water break.

The last quarter was exciting stuff with St. Vincent’s missing two glorious goal chances. The first a penalty saved from Nigel Hand following a foot bloke. Leo Corry did get a point for St. Vincent’s before Moynalty made a late charge. A Moynalty point from play in the 51st minute was followed by a goal from a clever quick free in the 54th minute.  The score now 1-9 v 1-13, Nigel Hand got another pointed free. Then the second goal chance of the quarter fell to Paddy Arnold, who seen his shot hit the woodwork.  Moynalty went on to score the next two points from frees but it was too late the game finished Moynalty 1-11 v St. Vincent’s 1-14.
