For long periods of this final it looked like there was only going to be one winner. The first 15 minutes were evenly balanced with the eventual winners holding a 0-5 to 0-3 lead at the first water break.
Donaghmore Ashbourne grew into the game after that an by half time had opened up a 0-9 to 0-4 lead.
The opening half was a straight shootout between Ashbourne’s Michael O’Sullivan and Tiernan Anderson Gaeil Colmcille. Anderson accounted for all the Kells scores while O’Sullivan raised eight white flags.
Operating as a wing forward O’Sullivan was outstanding and by the time referee Owen Ganly blew the long whistle the number 6 had notched 13 points.
By the second water break the winners had opened up a 0-15 to 0-6 lead but when the teams returned to action Gaeil Colmcille sprung to life and a Oisin O’Reilly goal along with points from John Gormley and three pointed frees from Anderson left a goal between the sides.
Donaghmore Ashbourne needed something to settle them down again and moved star man O’Sullivan back to defence where he cleared Kells attacks time and time again. In the end they held on but Donaghmore Ashbourne were deserving winners.
Before the game there was a minutes standing ovation for the late Dónal Ó Loingsigh. Dónal was an ever-present driving force for hurling in Donaghmore Ashbourne.
