Corn na Boinne: 'Hill' on a roll

Meath Hill's Jack McMahon

Meath Hill 1-17 vs Syddan 1-5

Meath Hill and Syddan met on Wednesday night in Syddan, in what can only be described as perfect conditions for football.

Mark Tully opened the scoring from an acute angle as Meath Hill played out the first half with a moderate breeze at their backs. Their lead was short lived as Jack Reid pointed well from a placed ball for Syddan. Not long after that the ball was in the Meath Hill net, as a mix-up in defence led to the Syddan full forward tapping into an empty net. Meath Hill rallied after this as scores came thick and fast from James Mooney, who kicked two in quick succession from wing back. Shane McCabe tapped over from close range, Jack McMahon popped up with two well taken points, Mark Tully put three more over along with a well taken Ryan Owens point after great work from Owens and Kieran Slavin, as they combined to devastating effect to dispossess their opponent and launch a counterattack which Owens finished off from a tight angle. Jack Reid would send over a 45 to leave the score at half time Meath Hill 0-11 Syddan 1-3.

The second half began as the first half finished, with Meath Hill in the ascendancy as they got the opening score of the second half and never looked back. The second half was no pedestrian affair as both teams continued to take lumps out of each other in a fiery encounter in which no quarter was given. Meath Hill would secure victory when the Syddan defender was stripped of the ball and Ryan Owens played a clever one-two with Pierce McGrath, with Owens finishing with aplomb past the despairing Syddan net minder. Meath Hill would round off the performance with two more points from Mark Tully along with well taken scores from Kieran Slavin, Pierce McGrath, Jack McMahon and Paddy Matthews.

Meath Hill players now look forward to the refixed Prem 7 final on Saturday night in Pairc Tailteann.

Syddan Report

MEATH HILL 1-17 SYDDAN 1-5

For the second successive week Meath Hill registered 1-17 as they overcame understrength Syddan in the Corn na Boinne at Ludlow Park on Wednesday evening.

The absence of so many regulars for the hosts handed Meath Hill the initiative and they were never extended as they picked up their second win of the campaign.

Syddan did lead briefly after Gary McManus pounced on a mistake by keeper Ryan Shekleton and finished to an unguarded net on six minutes. Jack Reid then converted a ’45 to give his side a 1-1 to 0-1 lead but that was as good as it got for Syddan who were always struggling to stay in touch.

Mark Tully accounted for four first half points while wing back James Mooney hit two fine scores as the visitors led 0-11 to 1-2 at half time.

Syddan needed scores at the start of the second half to have a chance but instead it was Meath Hill who continued in the ascendancy with the opening point of the half from Pierce McGrath.

McGrath turned provider for midfielder Ryan Owens to slap the ball to the Syddan net and end proceedings as a contest on 35 minutes.

Mark Tully added another point before Jack Reid converted his second free for Syddan’s opening score of the half.

Michael Fedigan knocked over another free for the home side and their only point from play for the hour came on 57 minutes from substitute Andrew White.
