Corn Na Boinne: Trim edge it in Millbrook

June 17, 2021

Oldcastle's Jason Scully

Oldcastle 2-09, Trim 2-11

Oldcastle lined out for their second Corn na Boinne match with the welcome addition of Jason Scully, freed from county duty with the end of the Football League, but missing Colin Hawdon, Pearse Sheridan and Oran Mulvanny, who were on Meath U20 duty in Mullingar.

Trim took the first point, the reply immediately following from the boot of Ronan Maguire. Trim took the next, CJ levelling again with a well-taken free. Oldcastle took the next three courtesy of Jason Scully and CJ, but Trim regrouped and added two points and a goal to go ahead by two. Robbie Farrelly pointed for Oldcastle but Trim were on a roll and another point was followed by a surprise goal just before the break to leave them five ahead on a score of Oldcastle 0-06, Trim 2-05.

With the restart whistle, Oldcastle went on a scoring blitz: Robbie Farrelly taking a point followed by a superb goal blasted to the net by Scully. A long-range effort from Paddy Rahill found the target next, levelling the score. Trim took the next two points, with CJ reducing the deficit again with a free. Most decisions seemed to go against Oldcastle and they had to battle all the way, and Trim took every chance they were given, and took the next few points. With everything to play for, Oldcastle now had a goal disallowed, a harsh decision. They battled on however, despite being five down, and some great moves saw the ball come in to CJ who blasted it past the Trim goalie, leaving just two points in it. The referee saw this as the time to blow his whistle however, bringing to an end an entertaining match with some great football on display, and one that the lads will know they could have won. Final score: Oldcastle 2-09, Trim 2-11.
