A young Navan O’Mahony’s team (many of whom played the football on Monday night) did themselves proud to overcome a strong Blackhall Gaels team and start the 2021 league campaign with a win.
After playing in the opening round of the football league the previous night, Eimear Fay opened the scoring for O’Mahony’s with a point. Blackhall Gaels got off to a strong start in the opening quarter and had five points on the board by the first water break. The Navan side had 3 points at this stage following a pointed free from Mia McNally and a point from play from Tara Fay after a long run from the middle of the park
Between the first water break and half time, O’Mahony’s doubled their scores to end with 6 points at half time to Blackhall Gael’s 7. The scorers in this period were Claire Mallon and Áine Donegan while Mia McNally was accurate with another free.
Despite being behind for the first half, the Navan girls never dropped their heads and were determined to keep the fight up. Never giving up, they had managed to draw level by the second half with both sides having eight points on the board. The scores came from Isobel O’Connor following a great solo run and a second point from Claire Mallon after receiving a super pass from dual star Orlaith Mallon.
In the final quarter of the game, O’Mahony’s failed to raise the white flag again while the hosts managed to score four points. The winning of the game came from two great goals. A well placed free from Tara Fay landed close to the goals and it took every effort Aoibhín McKenny had to get the ball past several Blackhall Gaels players to the back of the net. The final score was another goal from Mia McNally to leave O’Mahony’s with two points to spare in this opening round in Kilcloon.
