Trevor Giles beats Christy Byrne from the penalty spot

Our photo shows Trevor Giles beating Kildare keeper Christy Byrne from the penalty spot in the Leinster senior football championship semi-final 20 years ago.

The goal proved a major turning point. The game was evenly matched with the teams trading score for score. The Royals held a one point advantage, 0-10 to 0-9, midway through the second half when Richie Kealy was dragged to the ground inside the square by keeper Christy Byrne. Giles made no mistake from the spot kick and Meath were four points in front.

Meath went on to defeat the reigning Leinster champions 1-16 to 1-11 and set up a Leinster Final date with Dublin.

The Meath team and scorers against Kildare: Cormac O’Sullivan, Mark O’Reilly, Darren Fay, Cormac Murphy, Paddy Reynolds, Hank Traynor, Paul Shankey, Nigel Crawford, Nigel Nestor 0-1, Evan Kelly 0-1, Trevor Giles 1-5, Richie Kealy, Ollie Murphy 0-4, Graham Geraghty 0-4, Donal Curtis 0-1.
