Corn Na Boinne semi final: Pay back time for Walterstown in Carlanstown

September 28, 2020

Ronan Lynch makes a great catch for St. Michaels ahead of Alban Crosbie (Walterstown) during the Corn Na Boinne semi final in Carlanstown

St. Michaels 2-06, Walterstown 3-15

It was pay back time for Walterstown in Carlanstown on Sunday afternoon as they avenged their earlier championship defeat to their hosts with this convincing victory. Their 12 point win pairs them with Castletown in the final of the Corn na Boinne Cup while St. Michaels will be left to contemplate where it all went wrong in a year that promised so much.

Even in the early stages there looked to be only one winner of this encounter as Walterstown raced ahead scoring 1-4 without reply in the opening 10 minutes, their opening goal coming after just 90 seconds. Davy Lynch opened the scoring for St. Michaels with a point from play before Shane McDonnell added a fine effort from a '45 in the twelfth minute. Walterstown pulled one back before Ronan Lynch blasted to the back of the net for his sides opening major but the home side did spurn a number of other good goalscoring opportunities but it was the visitors who kept their side of the scoreboard ticking in the second quarter as they built up a 1-9 to 1-4 interval lead after McDonnell added the final score of the half for the home side.

Walterstown stretched their lead straight from the re-start, Davy Lynch cancelled that one out after good work by Christopher Drew, Shane McCormack pulled off a great save to limit the Walterstown damage and McDonnell and Lynch hit the target once again from play but the visitors struck again for their second major just before referee Joey Curley whistled for the second water break to lead by double scores 2-12 to 1-6.
Shane McDonnell gave St. Michaels a glimmer of hope after the re-start when he got on the end of an Oran Meehan delivery to blast to the corner of the net but unfortunately for the home side Walterstown did likewise immediately after at the other end of the pitch and with the game now well in the bag for Walterstown the contest petered out in the final quarter. Both Sam Briody and McCormack pulled off two great saves in those dying minutes.

St. Michaels: Shane McCormack; Ben Reilly, Sam Briody, Ciaran O'Reilly; Paddy Clarke, Mark Stafford, Christopher Drew; Cian Sheridan, David Lynch (0-3); Ronan Lynch (1-0), Shane McDonnell (1-3), Patrick Tobin; Oran Meehan, Jamie Farrelly, Ciaran Lynch. Subs: Justin McPhillips for Farrelly 37 minutes.
