A tally of 2-4 would not be enough to win most games but it was good enough for Belmullet in Erris yesterday as they pulled off a surprise victory against holders Knockmore in the Mayo SFC second round.

With blustery winds on the Atlantic coast making matters difficult for both sides, Daithi Cosgrove scored the two goals for Belmullet in a hard-fought 2-4 to 1-4 win, while Mayo talisman Ryan O'Donoghue also played a central role in the outcome of this Group B tie.

Knockmore, who claimed their first Mayo senior football championship title in 23 years last September, will continue the defence of their Moclair Cup title when they face Charlestown - 2-13 to 4-5 winners over Aghamore on Friday night - in the final round of the group stage.

Also yesterday, in Group 3, Westport qualified for the quarter-finals courtesy of a 0-11 to 1-6 victory over Castlebar Mitchels while Ballaghaderreen narrowly beat bottom-placed Balla 3-10 to 1-15 to keep up the chase.
